Portola, Welcome to the forum, Sorry about the diagnosis. If you read a lot of the posts here, you already know that this is not the end of life, only the beginning of the new normal. First tho, you need to get through the initial stages and make a treatment decision.
I think it’s super important for your husband to get a second opinion not only on treatment , Which would be putting the cart before the horse, but first On the pathology itself which is the horse. Request that the slides be sent to Jonathan Epstein at Johns Hopkins for the second opinion service. He is widely acknowledged to be the gold standard and prostate cancer pathology.
Urologists are surgeons and they will recommend surgery because that’s what they do. You should get opinions from multiple disciplines in radiation oncology. Depending on whether your Gleason score is still the same after Epstein‘s opinion, and also depending on what the MRI showed, your husband might be a good candidate for SBRT, sometimes known as cyber knife. It has been shown to be very effective for lower intermediate risk prostate cancer. Also visit with aradiation oncologist that specializes in Brachytherapy, and External beam radiation.
There’s a lot to know about prostate cancer before making decisions, and it’s big business so it’s up to us as individuals to be our own advocates. The more educated you are before making a decision the less chance of treatment regret later on.
Just to be clear surgery may be a good option for you husband, but there are other options that deserve to be explored as well
Others will be along soon with additional comments, good luck and keep us posted
