Some good news: it looks like ICU death rate for COVID-19 patients may be going down

From the article below, on the ABC News website, we are told:

" ... for people admitted to intensive care units for severe COVID-19 infection, the rate of death has declined by about one-third since the start of the pandemic."

This is because of

" ... (increases in) our understanding of strategies to mitigate viral spread and therapies to treat patients."

Specifically:

"The death rate for these patients in May was about 40%, down from nearly 60% at the end of March."

"I think we are much better off now," said Dr. Amesh Adalja, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Health Security, who is board certified in critical care and infectious diseases. "We have a better understanding of the pathophysiology of disease, we have better tools to improve patient care and we are more knowledgeable about ventilator management in these patients."

In sum,

" ... the study should not "be taken to mean that the virus is less deadly, just that we are getting better."

An encouraging report.

Very good news! A nurse I worked with for years sister just died of CV-19. I think she was mid 50s. I think she had at least one co-morbidity, but I'm not sure what they were. I mean co morbidity other than the almost certain low D and C blood levels, which I assume she had. When I heard her sister was in the hospital, I highly recommended that they do whatever they could to get their docs to give IV C plus methylprednisolone, and check the D levels, but I doubt any of it happened. Now that she is gone, I'm certainly not going to ask. I'm very sad for her, that is a rough loss. But good to hear the death rates are decreasing, for whatever reason. I hope that trend accelerates.

Previously 3/5 entering ICU died of Covid, today 2/5. Better results, but still not a good statistic.

With spiking cases, those emergency room medical teams are working 'round the clock ...

What a steep learning curve this has been for our frontline workers and medical professionals!

As we look ahead towards a potentially protective vaccine, I continue to hope we can also continue to find powerful anti-viral medications and treatments for those who become infected..

We all watch and wait for more signs of hopeful news ...
