F8: I agree that internet 'should' be seen as an essential public infrastructure. But it's not. I spent 36 years working in the electric power industry, and I know how the electric infrastructure we have came to be: a public/private deal was made in the 1930's to create the system that has been dismantled over the last 20 years or so.
Internet access needs that same kind of partnership created--but nobody has the political guts to make it happen. It would take something on the level of the PUHCA of 1934 to be created, where the internet providers were treated as regulated utilities with both the carrot and stick of regulation: Stick: you have to provide service to everyone who applies for it, at a defined rate--and the same rate for everyone for the same service. Carrot: guaranteed return on investment. It'll never happen.
My daughter waited 2 weeks for COVID test results. My grandson waited 12 days (well ,my daughter waited 12 days for his results he didnt care he is 15 months). This is one reason that the pandemic will continue to be a problem here. We can't do testing properly for everyone, how the heck are we going to create internet infrastructure for everyone.
It pains me to see what an utterly inept country we have become.#######
quick tests are necessary. I wonder what New York is doing about
testing? they have over a million kids in their schools.
