Good article on the advantages of Transperieal Biopsy vs traditional. disclosure: i read part not all of the article, skimmed the rest.

I spoke with a friend yesterday who is on AS and he told me (he heard this third party, not directly) that Johns Hopkins is now doing Transperineal only.

The doctor who treated me - Dr. Brian Moran - uses what is called a stereotactic transperineal prostate biopsy (STPB).

I had a Precision Point transperineal access biopsy as part of my AS program at Johns Hopkins last year. But, that is different than what is described in this link. The Precision Point system uses local anesthesia and is done free hand using both systematic and MRI targets.

One side note about biopsies, in general ...

Some years after my diagnosis, which included a biopsy, they were able to use tissue samples saved in the lab to "send in" for genetic testing that I pursued in more recent years.

The reason for doing this was because my grandfather, my dad, my uncle, and I have all been diagnosed with prostate cancer (3 generations in a row) --- and they wanted to assess the genetic factor, for me -- in the interest of seeking potential and future targeted medications.

Being able to pursue genetic testing was an "unexpected benefit" from having the biopsy, years before -----the lab tissue samples being used some years later!

Never fathomed that when I had the biopsy, years before!

Glad to see this is transpiring.

When I first came here, much was left to be desired within the medical community.

I haven't been keeping up much.

Probably still a good bit to go but this means that however slowly things are progressing.
