"Unusual" and "beautiful" would indeed be apt words to describe Rhythmic Gymnastics (also called Artistic Gymnastics), an Olympic event in which teams of young women gracefully combine gymnastic motions with ball and hoop playing.
But rather than try to describe it verbally, watching a quick Youtube video of it in action is the best way to show it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rvzyqlw0fuI watched this competition last night and was impressed with the obvious skill level that the event requires (talking about
the skill levels of various Olympic events), seeing to one's own gymnastic moves while at the same time following the motion of a fast-moving ball or hoop, and even catching and throwing it.
An unusual event to be sure, but one, in my mind at least, with a beauty and even a certain charm to it. Watching it reminded me of having a strange dream in the middle of the night.
From a website: "Rhythmic gymnastics became part of the Olympic programme at the Los Angeles 1984 Games, with the group event added at Atlanta 1996. Since then, the discipline has grown in popularity throughout the world."
Whether one likes Rhythmic Gymnastics or not, it has to be granted that it certainly took imagination and creativity to bring it about
