Genetic vs genomic testing — what’s the difference?

The title kinda says it all. I’ve read if many here who have had their samples tested to determine the type/aggressiveness of their PCa &/or to ascertain the risk for family members.

It seems like a good idea to know what your PCa is, plus I have 3 sons and it seems advantageous if they can learn if they are higher risk.

Which kind of test do I need?

Make sure your sons know about your PCa and make sure they get a baseline PSA hopefully by age 40. Then they should include the test each year with their other routine bloodwork.

As I understand the main genetic aspect to watch for is the BRCA issue. This is very rare and mainly in a certain ethnicity. Google the risk and determine wether your are at risk and should be tested. The tests given when you are dx like Decipher are to gauge the aggressiveness of the PCa to help determine treatment. They are not used to indicate whether your sons are at a higher risk.

Best things to tell your sons are to get tested regularly, follow a healthy lifestyle, mange weight and stress, be good fathers and put up with you with a smile!

Genetic tests DNA, genomic tests RNA as far as I know. JNF shared the more important items for PCa fathers and sons. I did the genetic testing for all of us and did not come up with anything unusual in the testing. A PCa father is the more important indicator for extra caution. Good luck with your boys, I will try again when mine hit 40.
