Fast Heart Rate (Sinus Tachycardia) & ADT

My husband is on ADT for prostate cancer, two months into the therapy, and his heart rate (HR) keeps going up and sodium level is trending low.

Prior to ADT his HR was in the healthy high 60s to mid 70s. He started the ADT in late August. His HR has been going up since early Sept.

HR became consistently high (always > 80) around Sept 20, and then went up to 90+ since Oct and stayed in 90s! Last week HR was elevated to 101-106 a few times.

Below is when/what he has received so far:

Degalerix (Firmagon) 2022-08-23 1 shot
Abiraterone (Zytiga) 2022-09-01 oral on going
Prednisone 2022-09-01 oral on going
Lupron 2022-09-27 received the 1st shot

Has anyone had similar experiences and if these are side effects from the ADT medications such as Lupron or Prednisone or Abiraterone?

No ADT experience but my guess would be the prednisone as it seems to cause all sorts of issues for people, especially with extended use.

You take covid shot and boosters? I know a number of people who acquired AFIB post shots. Not a conspiracy theorist. Just know many folks in this position. My dad actually passed from it.

A combination of those medications can be the cause of those symptoms. When I began ADT I was a runner and my HR was quite good, but on occasion it would go up to an unhealthy rate. Prednisone also caused some problems,and given that it is a steroid it is necessary to monitor.

I would check with his Physician just to be safe.

Prednisone is not a problem. It is taken with zytiga to offset the loss of cortisol. It is merely a replacement. Be sure to ask your Docs about it.

Given that you're calling it sinus tachycardia, I'm guessing you may have already talked to a cardiologist. If not, you probably should. If tachycardia, there could be any number of causes. Or, is it perhaps atrial fibrillation (which I've been dealing with for four years now. On Nov. 10th, I'm actually scheduled to have a total thoracoscopic modified MAZE procedure to try to finally get ride of Afib. Afib, you know elevates the risk or stroke, and tachycardia may carry the same risk. There are rate control drugs (e.g., Diltiazem) which can keep the heart at a reasonable rate. Good luck in figuring out what's going on.

Thanks to all for your input. Googled the drug side effects, fast heart rate is listed for all three medications my husbsnd is taking, Abiraterone, Prednisone and Lupron. His heart rate has dropped a little and is in the low 90's now but it is still quite high. He has a follow-up appointment with his MO next week and another appointment with a cardiologist two weeks later. Hope we will be able to find out what is going on.
