Both of my wife’s breast cancers were found due to her diligence with self examination, but not the by annual mammograms. In each case, the lump she could feel did not show on the mammogram. My prostate cancer was found by an elevated PSA during a physical as I turned 60.
Of all the cancers that can be found early through very simple and effective screening is colorectal, so it surprises me that only 45% are found through screening. But I do know a lot of otherwise smart people over 50 that don’t attend to it.
To show country differences, a friend in Ireland recently lost his father to a bad bout of colon cancer at age 61. There, they do not start screening for colorectal cancer until age 60. Though he was very fit, athletic and followed low risk lifestyle, when the cancer was found it was advanced and he lived only about a year. USA screening protocol would have probably made a tremendous difference.
