I seem to go through angst every year, when my son has to do his PSA. Worse than when I get my own PSA done, I think I may have posted about that last year.
He is very diligent, due to the family history of my father and I both having had PCa, in addition to the fact that he now has tested positive for the BRCA1 gene which makes his odds of getting PCa a bit higher (thank goodness it is not BRCA2, which potentially could be worse. In fact, His urologist told him, with the new finding of BRCA1 positive, he should test every six months, rather than yearly.
So this year, his PSA came back a couple of days ago at .9, up from .7 a year ago. He is 44 years old. So no big deal really. (it had been 1.1, a year earlier, then dropped to .7, last year, but might have been a different lab, not sure.)
However, he calls me yesterday and told me he takes Biotin supplements, which he read can cause falsely low PSA readings, as much as 10-30% lower than the actual number, sometimes even higher. So he called the urologist who said yes, he should get off the biotin, and retest next week.
Now I am a little freaked out. My own PSA started to rise in my early 50's and at 1.3 I was referred to a urologist.
I should know better at this point, than to get crazy at this point, there is nothing really to get crazy about. But I guess I will never learn.
I don't even think there is a question here, just getting my anxiety out. But ion the off chance that anyone has had an experience of taking biotin or any other supplement that can interfere with PSA testing, and having to retest for that reason, I'd be interested in hearing about it.
Last thing any of us wants is to see our child go through what we went through.
