My mum is 89 and was diagnosed with hyperthroidism five months ago. She also has heart failure and COPD. In those five months she has not had a single decent night's sleep. Most days she doesn't sleep at all through the night. On good nights she might get an hour, or slightly more, of sleep. It's getting so bad and she looks so exhausted, that I'm getting really worried about it. She is currently on 15 mg of carbimazole. Even after several weeks at lower doses, she hasn't improved at all. I've tried carnitine, ALC, motherwort, lemon balm, bugleweed, valerian, magnesium, vitamin D, lithium orotate, B12, tryptophan, melatonin, ribose, etc, etc, etc. Nothing works. The only things left to try are glycine and GABA. Has anyone else found any relief from this terrible disease? That level of insomnia must be very damaging, but I've told doctors and nurses many times and always got a blank response, they don't seem to realise how desperate the situation is. I'm her full time carer and I'm only getting a few hours sleep because I keep checking on her. Even that level of sleep is making me feel ill, so god knows how bad she must feel. I'm in the process of changing my GP in the hope he/she will be more caring and effective. No one has helped us so far though.
