why so some people take flagyl

Flagyl is an antibiotic that's used against anaerobic bacteria like c. dificile and some kinds of parasites. In UC, it's usually for diagnosed or suspected c. dif infection.

Flagyl is a vile drug (like taking insecticide) that was originally marketed as an amebicide. In fact, in the 1970s the Public Health Interest Research Group recommended that it be prescribed ONLY to use against amoeba (very hard to kill off) because it had caused chromosome damage in research lab animals. It gives the patient a very strong metallic taste in the mouth, usually after 3-4 days on it. Some gastros started using it to treat IBD, generally in combo with other meds & usually for Crohn's disease-- because they think it is more bacteria-driven than UC. It is also used to treat pouchitis in post-operative patients. It's a potent drug that's best avoided unless absolutely necessary because it can cause peripheral neuropathy, nerve damage in the extremities with extended use. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC ... Yuck! Don't personally recommend it. Huge pill, metallic taste, I couldn't take it with water because it made the gagging reflex triple, and caused some temporary nerve loss in my feet. Went a whole month feeling as if my feet were asleep and told to see a neurologist who prescribed Neurontin, which fixed it.
