For those that are interested, the antibiotic Cipro has been added to the FDA's warning list.

OMG!

It's not just Cipro...

"The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday ordered makers of flouroquinolone drugs - a potent class of antibiotics - to add a 'black box' warning to their products, which include Cipro, Levaquin, Floxin and other medications."

I've used all of those in the past!

Thanks for posting, Severin. Cipro drove me into a UC crisis 15 yrs back. (Had gotten Rx due to staph infection.) / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 3 Colazal daily for maintenance of remission)

yup, saw that in my local paper this AM... how painful does a "burst tendon" sound?!?!?! I hate Cipro anyway, never seemed to help me much. The "black box" warning is reserved for the worst of the worst, I believe. I thought of posting it here but you beat me to it!

Although this is worrying news, people need to remember that black box label is simply like putting a big exclamation mark on the box, it's not the same as pulling the drug off the market. The fact is, this side effect is well documented, and has been well studied in the past. Cipro has been on the market for over 20 years and all of its potential side effects are well known. It seems that the latest studies showed this particular side effect is not recognized early enough and leads to many more patients suffering needlessly when it can and should be prevented. Putting a black box label on it means that manufacturers and physicians will be forced to explain the risk (and signs pointing to trouble) to their customers/patients much more clearly, and also, force the physicians to be much more careful about prescribing the drug, using it only when it's clearly indicated, and not as a low risk broad spectrum antibiotic, when others can be used. That said, tendon rupture is still quite rare, and it doesn't happen over night, there are very clear signs that precede it, so patients need to be made more aware and instructed how to react if they notice the warning signs. Let's not create a panic here, please.

Yes, it is... Cipro is a brand name (Bayer AG), ciprofloxacin is the generic name for the same drug.

I can't tolerate Cipro anyway so I'm safe there but Levequin seems to be the main drug that actually doesn't cause me trouble Uc wise. Now I just have to be safer when I do take it, it seems.

I am taking Ciprofloxacin right now for a urinary tract infection which is what I am having to take due to a bacteria that is resistant to most other antibiotics, Cipro is what will treat the bacteria I have. I have been on it one time before a year and a half ago and it didn't bother me.

I was just given a three day supply of it after a bladder test I had done and I asked the nurse if she had heard of the warning and she didn't believe me. I would think they would keep up on these sort of things. I haven't had any problems and only two more pills of it to go!

I'm not worrying about. I have a total of 14 pills to take and have only taken two. I want to be rid of this stuff.

If we quit taking everything that they keep putting warnings out about we would be a 24/7 sick group of people. Same thing with food you eat.

The black box label is nothing to kid about, it's the strongest warning the FDA can impart on a particular drug. Please be especially careful when taking Cipro and steroids together, and inform your physician immediately if you start feeling pain in your tendons, it's a sign of a serious problem, and this black label is there for a reason, too many doctors and patients have been ignoring these symptoms in the past and this led to many more serious injuries than was necessary. It usually takes around 2 weeks of tendon pains before a serious injury occurs (although it can happen without any warning) so it is preventable, but only if doctors and patients are well informed and aware. Also, above all, try and avoid Cipro and other fluoroquinolones whenever possible, ask your doctor for alternatives, not every little infection needs to be treated with this particular class of antibiotics. They have many more (and much more serious) side effects than some other, older or non-broad spectrum antibiotics. There are always alternatives, and patients need to be aware about what they're putting in their bodies, and how it can affect them in the long run.
