Dear All

I'm suffering from an inflamed anus. The BMs are ok but it's hard to wipe afterwards. I've been using prep H, and was first prescribed cortisone suppositories. I'm on canasa now. Still, it hasn't improved significantly. It is very, very itchy and leads to bloody wipes after I scratch. I'm not sure how to handle it. I've tried chinging my diet, but it doesn't help much.

I've had that even during my remission periods, but never treated it in any way, it just went away in a matter of days. How long have you had this?

I have had it, it usually goes away. Try a little cortisone over the counter cream, it can stop the inflammation quite gently and fast.

Sounds like hemmies, UC does NOT involve the anus, only crohn's does, better get that checked out.

I agree w/ pb4 sounds like hemmies. Now, one thing that has happened to me is that my bottom and the upper part of the back of my legs ach alot - it has settle down now that the worst part of my flare is over, but still it aches. Hope your better soon!

Be sure you're cleaning yourself with a wet wipe after each BM. With hemmies, it can be especially hard to clean all the nooks and crannies, and it's much more comfortable with a wipe than dry paper. And yes, the cortisone cream sounds like a good idea.

I was prescribed a cortisone cream just for that and other itches involved "down there".  I am using Proctofoam for rectal UC now and it is nice for that area as it soothes.

     I'm not on any rectal meds now.  I have ulcerative proctitis...doesn't that include the anus Pb?  Anyway, it sounds like a bad case of hemmorhoids to me teacher.  That is if you aren't having other issues, like diarrhea, urgency and bleeding in addition.  The itching sounds like true blue hemmorhoids.

No it doesn't the rectom is different than the anus, the anus is the hole that the stool passes through the rectom is the area inside the anus.

LOL, you're not the first one to think that....people have gotten so pissed off at me for telling them they are not the same so I just tell them to google and find out for themselves, no worries, I think it's fair to say we ALL learn something new everyday and that's a good thing.

UCers can develop anus issues, too-- frequent bms irritate it. Also, fungal inflammation can result from incomplete cleansing down there. My gastro recommends regular cleaning with Tucks medicated pads to be sure that no "debris" (such as toilet paper bits) is left clinging after bms. Desiten and other zinc oxide ointments help relieve fungal problems. If hemmies are the major problem, though, you'd likely do better with Proctofoam HC than with Prep H. Ask your doctor for an Rx-- so that you'll have some on hand whenever the hemmies act up. It comes in aerosol canisters with washable (reusable) applicators. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

Yes, UCers can get fissures/hemmies but not perianal crohn's skin tags (which is inflamed/diseased anal tissue).

Could be just irritated and not hems - I'd do some cortisone cream before worrying too much. Weird stools passing through daily and a LOT of wiping can lead to burn.

Warm sitz baths are helpful, too.
