Type II diabetes.


I work out 3-4 times a week, I eat a balanced, low-fat, controlled carb diet (my husband is diabetic and I've been following his diet for 10 years), I'm not taking Pred.



I'm diabetic and I'm ticked!

Well isn't that just a kicker!? Just what you DON'T need! I'm so sorry that you have this now in addition to everything else. When I find that ever elusive store that has fresh new healthy bodies on the shelves, I will let you know!

I would be too! And I'm sorry...that just plain sucks. It just goes to show that some things are due to genetics and completely out of our control. I guess that would bring me some comfort...knowing that it's NOT my fault that it happened.

Yes, in my mind I'm 40. Unfortunately my body is 120.

I'm taking Metformin. I started it this morning, just waiting to see if it will give me the big D.

OH yikes! Seems like multiple diagnoses are just in the cards for some of us.. lol... Well I feel for you Judy.. and believe me.. I CAN UNDERSTAND!!! So sorry to hear your diagnosis.. it's difficult enough dealing with ONE chronic illness.... I hope the med doesn't have you running back and forth to the potty... I'm wishing you the best and sending good thoughts your way :)

Thanks, ladies. I guess it's a good thing I long ago realized that life just isn't fair.

And fruitgirl, if this is genetic it's a new mutation, because no one in my family on either side has ever had any autoimmune disease. My mother's half-sister had diabetes, but it ran in her father's family.

How did you find out? I mean, obviously you got tested, but did you have any symptoms or suspicions?

Diabetes is kinda my scary disease, something I am very scared of.

Hey, new mutations happen all the time! :) It's part of what makes plant breeding so dang cool. Well, ok, to a plant dork like me!

Still, I think that you were doing everything "right"!

I have an aunt with RA, but no autoimmune diseases other than that. My cousin has Crohn's, but she's adopted, and while I truly think of her as a cousin, we're not genetically related.

     Sorry to hear this Judy.  Did you have a glucose tolerance test?  My fasting blood sugars were always normal but my 2 hr pp went as high as 237 a few months ago.  I was getting tingling in my hands and excessive thirst, so I knew it was a sign of diabetes.  My doctor didn't seem concerned though.  He said it was because of the prednisone.  I have a glucose monitor here at home but I haven't checked my blood for a few weeks.  It was testing within normal limits for quite awhile though.

     How often are you getting the Remicade infusions?  For the past week I have been bleeding after my first bowel movement but I think it is from hemorroids because if I have a second and or third movement there is no blood.  Next infusion is on the 31st.

I had no symptoms that pointed to diabetes. I've pretty much been thirsty all my life, I carry a bottle of water with me and sip all day. So, no increased hunger or thirst, no change in my alertness, nothing. I did recently start on an inhaler for mild asthma (another old problem returns), but that was less than a week before my blood test and wouldn't have affected it.

My blood sugar was slightly high when I was on oral steroids, but hasn't been for the past 4 years.

Christine, I get Remicade every 8 weeks. My loading dose when I first started was at week 0, 2 and 6, then I went to every 8 weeks.

Yuck Judy! That really stinks, esp. since you were doing everything right. But like it was mentioned above, since you were working out and eating healthy at least you can't blame it on yourself. Maybe that'll help you keep stabilized with the blood sugar.

I hope the meds work for you and don't aggravate the UC.

Oh, rats! So sorry you got this crummy news! Is your blood sugar way off? I don't know much about levels or Rx treatment, but I do recall that my mother's oldest sister (sibship of 9!) developed Type II in her 60s, whereas neither parent nor any sib ever did. Some medical events just happen at random. Earlier this century people would shrug it off as fate. In a way, I prefer the "old car" analogy! (LOL) Good luck with the new med & definitely keep us posted. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

Not good news Judy....hope this can be dealt with without going on Insulin.
