Mono

I had mono, but it was pre-UC. I had a terrible case in college. Had to drop out a semester. I had it drilled in my head over and over: the best thing you can do is REST. That means total rest. No running around, nothing. I spent at least a month either in bed or on the couch. If he starts to feel better and tries to do too much too soon, he could relapse. REST, REST, REST and drink plenty of fluids.

I had a bad UC flare, my gall bladder removed & diagnosed with Epstein - barr in the same month. I was on Asacol at the time & then started taking Imuran. I was off work for 4 months. It took my an entire year to get my strength completely back & 2 years until I started feeling like myself again. I now have Chronic epstein barr as well as UC. I take Famvir which is an anti-viral medicine & tagamet for my epstein barr. It really helps keep my Chronic epstein barr under control. I know tagamet is a stomach ulcer medicine but for some reason, it helps with mono. Good luck.

Just an update on my mono patient.  He is finally back up and running:)  Working, going to classes, and just left for the USC (South Carolina:) Kentucky basketball game. He did move home from the dorm, per the advice of his doctor.  He had lost about 15 pounds, but gained it all back pretty quickly, once he started feeling good.  He quit the 6 mp for 4 days, and then started back at a lower level.  No UC troubles.  (I hope I didn't jinx that:)
