tidbit re. transit time

I know in the past we've had discussions about transit time, and in my reading I came across mention of a clinical trial about this very thing.
The blurb I read said:
"The rapid diarrhea that patients experience who have diarrhea occurring after eating specific foods may be causing a "physiologic gastric dumping syndrome". This means that rather than the food being kept in the stomach for normal digestion, it rapidly goes into the small intestine and diarrhea occurs."
So, this explains why some folks can have D so quickly after a "trigger food" even when logically I've not thought that particular food would be able to go through the system that quickly. Apparently these "trigger foods" can go through the stomach very fast and on to the small intestine where it - well, we all know, it flies through virtually unchanged and comes out as very unpleasant D!
In this study, patients are being asked to swallow capsules with tiny radio transmitters when they eat various meals, and the capsules are being tracked and timed.

I just thought this was interesting.... always trying to expand my knowledge base about the GI system!

I believe dumping syndrome is it's on specific problem and not related to UC. I think what UCers experience more than anything is peristalisis. Jpouchers and ostomates have increased symptoms of peristalsis too.

I don't buy the dumping syndrome as some describe it....and I don't think the article explains time either. One problem with a transmitter object...it won't be digested and may move faster through the system than actual food.


I'm not saying some don't have fast transit time.....that could be one reason many are overweight or underweight.

Corn is supposed to work this way as a marker however the information I read said its nearly impossible to get a reading on transit time because some foods are entering the colon while others from the same meal are still in the stomach. However if your meal is not complex, say just a salad and you have eaten no other greens recently you get a pretty good idea what your transit time is for that food. My personal belief ( regarding my body ) is accelerating transit time with stimulants and unprocessed large doses of sugars takes acids along with them into the intestine and begins to harm it. When I slow the transit time the quality always goes up dramatically and more nutrition is absorbed as well probably.

HI GUYS,

I recently had a transit test called Sitzmark, where i swallowed  capsules over 3 days with radiopaqthic markers inside. The reason being my colitis was causing severe C, 3 sets of markers then an X ray on day 7.

I cannot lose weight in fact i am heavier now than before the flare. The results astounded my GI my gastric transit was so slow i have to take strong laxatives to actually go to the toilet. It is not uncommon for me to only go to the loo once every 9-12 days. So basically i'm full of sh%%%t lol

This test is much cheaper and easier to do than many others ask for it it may help you undersatand what's going on in your body.

Loopylil,

It sounds as if you have 2 separate conditions, UC and colonic inertia. Is this what your GI is thinking too?

Yes my colon is not working properly.  spent the last 20 years telling my doc that i had constipation they just said if it didn't hurt or i wasn't uncomfortable just to take laxatives. The upshot is now with the colitis my D is man made lol

So the GI wants me to have hypnotherapy and cognitive therapy to try to ease the situation, any other ideas please suggest them i am literally at my wits end.

Many people with CI have found relief from surgery. Surgery would also relieve you of UC. However, it's important to rule out motility disorders of the small intestine before considering. The last thing you want is to have surgery and continue with the same problems.

There are times when I'm in the middle of eating and I have to "go" but it's not D, it's still formed stools...and it doesn't always happen and it doesn't only happen when I eat something specific, it's simply the nature of the disease...there's really nothing to analyze about it...even if I don't eat for 2 days, I'm still poopin cuz it generally takes 72 hrs for most people to completely empty their bowels of the food they had 3 days before.
