Do any of you have doctors that stay away from steroids?

My doc wanted me off of pred sooooo fast when I first flared. I freaked below 10 because I started seeing blood. One big black clot, I remember. Panic attacks. He said stay the course and the asacol should take over. Well BS. I wound back up on 40 mg, two more times. I see his point, but I don't see how Asacol can pick up where the pred leaves off if you are still bleeding.

If I had gotten off of pred that fast he would have put me on 6 MP.

I switched docs btw and a year later I'm still on pred, two mg every other day and tapering.

I'm doing well, however.

My GI prescribes drugs like candy or at least tried with me. I already demonstrated that I am allergic to mesalamines, even throwing up after inserting Canasa suppositories. In a follow up visit four weeks after the start of my remission, (I thought I was fine), he prescribed Asacol and 40 mg of prednisone.

The only reason why I went to the doctor in the first place was to see if he could end my flare, and my flare had already ended. There is diabetes in my family and my fasting blood sugar levels spike unless I am careful how I eat. The side effects of pred are horrendous besides possibly sending me over the edge into diabetes so I refused to take it. My GI became angry and said I was risking cancer unless I took pred to snuff out any lingering inflammation. I told him if he was so concerned about cancer then why didn’t he check my blood levels of vitamin D and folate. Needless to say he fired me as his patient.

 Wow what a rude doctor. My doctor gave me a list of medications that would treat my area of inflamation with their side effects and how they work then let me decide what I wanted to try. He has always made it clear he hates steroids because the side effects are often worse then the UC.
