Acetaminaphen - only choice?

His acetaminophen the only safe choice of pain-reliever for us?
(I'm talking about for standard aches and pains, headaches, etc.)

I know that aspirin and ibuprofen are a no-no.

This is what is recommended but acetaminophen never worked for me so I would take Advil about 2x per year for headaches. I think it's safe to use but sparingly. Best to ask your GI.

My son can take Advil/ibuprofen once in a while with no bad effect. Years ago I took it around the clock for a bad back ache and went into a horrible flare - but I wonder taking it once upon rare occasion might be fine.
Once or twice a year I'll get a severe headache and take aspirin. The single dose doesn't seem to hurt me - but we need to each choose our own risks.

Same here, I can get away with a dose or two of Advil but it depends. If I am flaring then I can't but if I am in remission I don't seem to have an issue with it as long as I don't take more then one or two. I actually prefer Tylonel Arthritis over regular extra strength Tylonel. It has a higher mg count and it lasts 7-8 hours.

I just stick with tylenol. Last time I tried Motrin, and it made things worse.

Tylenol has its risks regarding liver problems over the long-run...but there are variables regarding dosage, frequency, length over-time, sensitivity...etc.

I use aspirin for headaches and have the OK from my doc.

For Tylenol it's good for some things, doesn't even touch a headache.

If you can find a back remedy one that's tylenol mixed with methocarbamol..that helps back/aches, etc.

If one is afraid of tylenol toxicicity...NAC helps with that...

Acetaminophen has never worked for me, and Naprosyn, although my favorite and most effective analgesic, is a sure fire trigger for a flare for me. I haven’t tried ibuprofen since being diagnose because I’m afraid of it, so I don’t know about that.

I take 325 mg of aspirin daily for a heart arrhythmia. I asked my GI about it, and his response was “Cardio trumps GI”, so I continue to take it; with no apparent problems.

Been taking Tylenol Arthritis for years - up to maximum recommended dose every day - without any problems.  Occasional Motrin for knees but rare these days!

Aleve works so well for me (back pain) that I decided the risk is worth it when I'm really hurting.
I didn't notice that it made any difference in the UC. Antibiotics set it off, though.

My doctors said I could take hydrocodone.....with a perscription obviously, but i;ve only taken it after a smal procedure i had done.

Dear All,

Fioricet & Midrin, both have acetaminophen. They also have other ingredients. Are these ok for UC? I too get nasty headaches, but all I can take is tylenol/acetaminophen.

Seriously folks, where have you all been?

I have been (almost) yelling on this board about my migraine, even posted a couple of questions if there is anyone here who is suffering from migraine/headache when I was trying to connect my migraine to the medications and got no responses at all.

I was taking naproxen initially for more than 2 years, worked like charm but gave nasty flare. Neurologist offered me metaprolol, it didn't help. Now I am on topamax, its helping, still migraine shows up once a week and to a lot lesser 'strength', as opposed to once in 3 days with a bang.

Plain paracetamol (upto 1gm 3 times a day) didn't help me. I should really look into these other medication mentioned in this thread. Only one now helps a bit is Ibuprofen but I am scared as hell to take any NSAID as I really don't want another flare.

Tylenol doesn't do anything for my migraines. My OBGYN gave me something called Ponstel for the migraines. They are defintiely linked to my monthly cycle, they always come before and after. I read that Ponstel isn't good to use if you have UC but I had a debilitating migraine the other day and I had to take it and fortunately, I didn't have any adverse reactions. I am thinking it is okay as long as you're not taking it regularly. I usually only get maximum 1-2 migranes a month and some months I won't get one at all. I was surprised how much it helped. I've never had any drug help with migraine pain.

Oh no no no, I wasn't complaining. I wrote it in a sort of funny way.

At that time I was very desperate to connect the dots in terms of migraine/headache to the medications and hence was seeking desperate help. Its absolutely ok not to respond as folks may really have no answer to my question, even my GI had no answer. He directed me to a neurologist and she is still confused. She has ordered MRI of my brain, lets see if I got any defect in my top floor.. :)

No apologies Sherry, we are here to help each other. I didn't mind. Again, it was not a complaint. I am sorry, if I sent that kind of signal.

Delta, I don't think I was a member at the time when you asked...is there any chance you have hormonal migraines? I learned this trick from a Paul Harvey radio show...calcium for hormonal migraines..I was guaranteed a knock me on my behind migraine every single month...then heard on PH to supplement calcium, I tested it a few different ways & I had to take it at least 3 weeks solid prior to my cycle to be effective, but it def worked, I just stay on it all the time now..I still get headaches bad, but not like those..that said..even if hormones are not your issue, maybe this will help someone else?

What do you take? Just a regular calcium supplement? How many mg a day?

Just plain calcium..500mg at a time is all you need, anything over your body flushes..you can take it twice a day, but once a day did the job for me...has for 10+ years now..the only negative I am aware of for taking calcium is if you are prone to kidney stones.
