Just when I thought I could get off Pred - Endoscopy and Sigmoidscopy yesterday

Well, after having a horrible set of reactions to my Betnesol enemas (thrush infection, moon face, mental alertness, fatigue, no energy), I was weaning off the steroids using corticosteroid suppositories as of last Wednesday. I was just starting to feel like the steroid fog was lifting.

I had my scopes yesterday (endoscopy and sigmoidoscopy) and the Dr. was not pleased with the results. My endoscopy was all clear (weird given all the pain I had been having - now I think it was part of the thrush infection which has cleared), but I have severe inflammation to 22 cm. The only thing I really remember the dr. telling me is that he is sorry and knows how I feel about Prednisone, but that we absolutely have to get the inflammation under control. I am now on 40 mg of Prednisone/day.

Last night, after the scopes, I started running a fever (which has since cleared) and was up 5 times through the night with bloody diarrhea. Is it typical/normal to get this kind of reaction to a scope when you are badly inflammed? Could it just be my body waving the white flag?

Wow, I am sorry you're going through this. I hate those nights when you keep getting up. I don't think it is typical, although, severe means those symptoms wouldn't be unexpected. I remember nights when I was up quite a few times. My GI always asks if I am having "nocturnal BMs". Such an odd term. If you started pred today, you should see results quickly. Let's hope you feel better quickly and that you can get on and off pred in a short period of time. Get rest and try not to stress out.

This is my first time on it ever! I was on Betnesol enemas (betamethasone steroid). Even with the enema-based steroid I ended up with those horrible side-effects. My PCP did tell me that with the amount of inflammation that I had the steroid enema would be absorbed very quickly into my bloodstream and so it makes sense that I would have systemic effects. I am hoping that the oral pred won't react with me any worse than the enema. I'll keep you posted!

I had horrible side effects from the hydrocortisone enema (60 ml) right away. I'm on prednisone 30 mg now, starting to taper to 20 mg next week and zero side effects, except eating more, which is very good for me.

I find scopes can still up my bowels and I end up having a harder time the next few days/nights. I also found anti anxiety drugs helped some for the side effects when on high doses of oral pred...

Did you talk to your doctor about trying the Mesalamine (Rowasa) enemas? They might help calm things down in the lower regions.

I had a lot of bloody diarrhea after my last colonoscopy, along with lower left side pain, and I was not flaring at all at the time. So, I imagine it would be rough on you. You should let the doctor know if you continue to have problems.
