I was just diagnosed with UC in January 2011.  I saw several commercials and read about hundreds of lawsuits on people who took Accutane and subsequently were diagnosed with UC.  I have NO family history of UC which is what my doctor tried to blame it on.  I'm convinced it was from taking Accutane as a teenager!

Has any who now has UC previously take Accutane?

I never used accutane and I have no family history. If you took accutane, I would imagine there is a good chance it is your trigger.

There have been quite a few threads on Accutane here and if you search it you should find them. Many who used it as youngsters over 10 years ago may have trouble getting their rx/medical records which is vital to one's case. I took it when it first came out and the Dr that rx'd it refused to acknowledge he prescribed it for me and said he only keeps records going back 10 years; he STILL prescribes this dangerous drug in it's generic form today. He told me he even rxd it fir his own duaghter a few years ago and she now has GI issues This doctor should lose his license.

I did some research on this and saw an article a while ago about the correlation between accutane and UC. They said that in their opinion there was no direct correlation, but rather part of the general acne treatment. It was stated that the majority of people who use accutane have previously used large amounts of antibiotics to clear their acne, which would lead to UC.

I didn't take it, but did use lots of antibiotics for mine. Not sure what to think of the article.

I never took accutane but took antibiotics for my acne (Bactrim DS, twice daily for 3 or so years). I have no conclusive evidence this gave me UC (there are so many potential other reasons), but it is definitely one of the reasons I have in the back of my mind. I still have acne (darn my oil skin), but I just wash frequently now and use exfoliant etc. Acne is still there (not as clear when I took antibiotics) but not as bad if I didn't do my daily routine of face washing etc. Still, I am never going to take medication for cosmetic purposes again... learnt my lesson.

I personally did not use antibiotic therapy for acne or anything for that matter and no one in my family going back 3 generations has/had ibd.

If there was no direct correlation between Accutane and ibd why is Roche paying out millions in damages? They are losing in court badly.

Thanks for all your comments...I know the truth is no one can say without a doubt you got UC because of Accutane.  I know and trust in my heart that I did get it from Accutane but it's really hard to accept.  I mean my acne will hopefully eventually go away.  My UC will not!
