Remicade of 6MP?

I personally feel that 6mp is safer because it has been around longer but that's my opinion and has no scentific backing. I think a lot of people would disagree on this topic and I've heard the effectiveness of Remicade is around 60%. I am not sure what % taking 6mp see improvement. One thing I can tell you is that my GI actually recommends taking both medications at the same time. 6mp/Imuran can help prevent the body from building up antibodies to the mouse protein in Remicade allowing it to provide more benefit for a longer time. The wonderful thing about Remicade is that it can provide almost instant benefit whereas 6mp can take months to build up in your system. Not everyone sees improvement from Remicade that quickly, for some it takes a few infusions to see benefit and for the 40% who doesn't respond, they may not see much improvement at all. None of these medications are ideal. I started 6mp for convenience, I like that it's one pill and I can take it at home. I prefer that to having to go to the hospital for infusions but others would disagree. It really depends on what you want. Good luck :)

     I was on 6MP for seven years.  It really didn't keep me in any long term remission.  I believe the best it did was a two year remission after taking it for about six months.  I then started flaring yearly, then twice a year, and, well, you know, I had surgery June 28th of last year.  Remicade failed after my 3rd infusion and Humira didn't do squat for me either.

     My GI doctor took me off the 6MP two weeks before I started Remicade.  He is not a believer in double dosing with the immune suppression meds.

     I would give the 6MP a shot first.  It does work for some people.

I take Imuran, the sister drug of 6 MP and I have no side effects.  I also have been known to have an alcoholic drink or two from time to time.  In fact I just finished a beer.  I hope my comments help.  My blood work has been spotless.
