Hiya Poopypants!
Yes! I take proteolytic enzymes and have been for a couple of years or so. I would give up my Asacol before I'd give up my enzymes. I also take digestive enzymes.
If you want a good read on them google Theramedix web site. They have all different kinds and useful info. I take this particular brand and I do get it through a practitioner. They are not cheap, but are very effective.
The three I take from Theramedix are: PRX (protolytic), DGX (digestive enzymes with protease) and SGI ( soothing and healing for crohn's and other ibd and ibs stuff) If you try the PRX and it burns a little, just add an SGI and it takes the burn away. These enzymes make my stomach feel good.
I have crohn's/colitis and use the enzymes to keep my blood clean and flowing (we are prone to clots) and for breaking down fibrins that are built up in the way of adhesions, scar tissue and athereosclerosis type thingies.
I don't think your practitioner is nuts at all. I love my enzymes!
