I promised to report if I saw any changes, well after two days of taking whey protein, one scoop a day. I can report that when I wipe I can see mucus, and possibly less blood and less blood frequency. I know it is early yet, will report progress if any. My gas has increased, which I believe is good,my remaining probiotic bacteria are being fed.
Anyhow here are studies on whey, took me hours on pubmed to find them all, have another thread on cheese whey with these, but thought to put them here also. I am a firm believer in the theory that you need to have a strong mucus barrier to control UC, PC is one way to do it and it seems that this is another. Am taking CVS brand whey, quickest stuff I could find, but cold processed may work better, don't know. You can search the net for cold processed whey powder.
My son who has a j-pouch has been taking whey longer,he also can see clear mucus now. He was taking it to make more muscle.
Its the threonine in the whey that makes mucins, but whey has many more interesting effects. You could also just take threonine if you don't tolerate whey, but may not work as good. From reading there are also mucinases which degrade mucin/mucus, this can be stopped with Pepto Bismol and or ETDA.
Hope you enjoy all these studies, they make an interesting case.

I am a big believer in this theory where the detergents we ingest from processed foods, toothpaste, dishwasher detergents might be the culprit,in UC by thinning the mucus barrier. Just look at all the emulsifiers they put into processed food. Now that I have found this article again, it makes me rethink my diet to remove processed foods. I have been brushing with baking soda for about 2 weeks.
You even have to watch the pills you take for surfactants, emulsifiers,CMC. Upon more reading CMC does not digest,it is in the stool. Read this study,if nothing else, then you will see the importance of a strong mucus barrier. On interesting tidbit is that normal stools dont have bacteria on their surface, the surface is covered in mucus.

If whey works on me to any extent, it might be because I am probably mal nurished, all these years of UC have taken its toll.
