Red bumpy cracked dry tongue

Hey guys. So since I've been flaring up my tongue has been extremely painful! It's red, has bumps all over it. Crack down the middle. It hurts! It's very sensitive to certain foods. It's weird and I do not enjoy it. I'm not dehydrated because I drink a lot of liquids and get plenty of food. Any ideas as to what it can be? Thanks guys

It sounds like "geographic tongue". You can Google it for further info-- has a variety of causes, most of which are not serious threats. It beset me a few yrs ago, but I got rid of it pretty quickly, TG. At the time I checked it out with my dentist. / Old Hat (31 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

A red cracked tongue (fissured tongue) can be a sign of a few things; Sjogren's, diabetes, folic acid deficiency, thrush....if it persists, you should see your doctor to find out what is causing it.

I think it might be a side effect of all of the medicine that I have been on. I have a doctors appointment on Tuesday so I'll make sure to show my GI. I showed it to the doctors while I was admitted to the hospital but they just said oh don't worry that's nothing. However he didn't really look at it at all.

What foods bother your tongue? This might be a free opportunity to figure out what foods fires off your immune system in your GI tract. I know bananas give me horrible mouth cankers and they bother my guts.

Could even be a gluten sensitivity making a show... Have you tried gluten free? Switch to a rice based diet, don't swtich to a bean and peanut butter diet like I've seen some celiacs do... Would wreck havoc in a colitis person :P

Have the drs. checked your vitamin B-12 levels? I know when mine get low, and when I'm close to being due for a shot (I get monthly injections) that I notice my tongue getting inflmaed, red, splotchy, etc. If you haven't had b-12 checked, you should do so.
