Hi Guys,
Just a question if any ladies know of a great obstetrician's around sydney who have a good understanding of UC and med's. Me and hubby are ready to start a family however I am still really worried about the whole process still on imuran 100mg and Prednisone 15mg.

You can always ask your GI for a recommendation for an OBGYN. Talk to your GI about your plans on starting a family. He/she may want you to wait until after you taper off the prednisone.

I can't help with the ob but want to offer encouragement. Pregnancy does strange things to my uc at least. My first pregnancy I flared (undiagnosed) the entire time, and my second pregnancy promptly ended a flare. Hopefully you will have a symptom free time :) As for meds, my gi just told me that he doesn't recommend imuran for women thinking of becoming pregnant. Haven't looked up the research on it but you may look into it. I was on prednisone when I got pregnant with #2, and while it's not ideal to be on it (I did start tapering because symptoms cleared), was on it for 10 or so weeks of pregnancy with no problems. I am taking pred again while BFing--also not ideal but pedi told me to just wait 4 hours after I take it to nurse-also something to consider in case you flare shortly after birth (like me now, ugh).

I had stopped taking IMuran (after 11 years) a month before I fell pregnant, coincidentally, and my doctor said thank god I did because it can cause birth defects. Just a heads up.

With my pregnancy, I flared pretty much the entire time, and am still flaring 2 months after giving birth, but otherwise it was a perfect pregnancy and everything has gone well. I had two short courses of prednisone during pregnancy (pred doesn't do any harm) and am tapering right now, too.

My specialist informed me imuran doesn't cause defects so it's great feedback.
Will find ob and talk to him/her. Thanks again.

I can't help with the ob, but had a baby in august, my first since UC, and it went really well for me. I was in remission, and just felt even better during pregnancy. Post baby (my third c/s), I continued to feel great, and I nursed her until she self weaned a few weeks ago.

I am on Remicade and stayed on it the whole time, as the research indicated it's safety, and so far she is as perfect as can be. I had talked about immunosuppresants with them though-and the general consensus was that if I *had* to be on them it wasn't ideal, but not to be for the first trimester. That we could add them if needed once I was further along. My ob was not excited about that option, and was glad we didn't need to go that route. He was ok with pred, much more so than imuran or 6mp.

Oh-and my gi said the most important thing to him was that I was already in remission when we TTC. He said that the rule of thirds tends to apply in this case as well, that 1/3 of people will get better, 1/3 will stay the same and 1/3 will get worse. So starting off in remission gives you the best odds of staying that way.
