Humira is now approved for UC

Awesome! UC'ers and GI's everywhere are sure to celebrate!

Man, this is useless.

All I have to do is go in my cryogenic chamber and freeze myself until the year 2125. By then the cure will be invented! And then, use one of the time travel capsules from Best Buy to get back to 2012.

Of course, I'll have to re-build my muscles after being stuck in stasis for over 100 years, but I don't see a better solution.

Yeah, I'm with Somedude and Dontscopeme. Find something better than this. APPROVE something better.

I think I read the 18% article. One of the discussion points was that UC might need a higher dosing than Crohns for Humira to be effective. But I admit, that low remission rate was on of the reasons that I opted for surgery before trying Humira. I figured with Remicade not working, then chances weren't so great that Humira would work.

Another not fun thing I read about Humira - scientist thought that people wouldn't build up resistance to it like they do to Remicade. However, some of those with RA that have been on Humira for awhile have noticed a loss of effectiveness for whatever reason. I think RA was one of the first diseases targeted by Humira.

rbart - Remicade has a much higher remission rate for UC. If Humira doesn't work after a few doses, ask your GI if you can give that a try instead.

supposedly the new drug Vedolizumab has a much higher remission rate. Coming out in 2013, can't wait!!!

I don't quite understand why some comments about Humira being approved could draw such discouraging comments. If the remission rate is only 100 out of 900, just think how grateful those lucky 100's are. Some of the comments almost seem to indicate it's a useless advance. This is merely another step in an attempt to, if not eradicate this problem, offer some solace and hope to a few of us. Also, it does not mean no further studies will be conducted and hopefully even newer drugs may appear in the near future. No, it may not be a magic bullet but for goodness sakes let's be thrilled work is being done offering us additional options.

Great it was approved! I'm not in remission totally. Getting there. Been on it for 3 months. about 75% better. I'll take it!

Despite the stats, I'm still glad it's approved. I wanted Humira first but insurance wouldn't approve coverage because it wasn't "FDA approved for UC". So I went for Remicade. I hope that GI's and UCers get a chance to try Humira if they want to without all the red tape. It's so much more convenient and no mouse proteins! If it works, wohoo! If it doesn't, you can still try Remi.
