Eating meat for protein is a bad equation. A better source of protein are beans, which come is so many textures and flavours, you can some you like, no matter what your taste. We really don't need meat at all, it's fine once in awhile, but eating meat for health reasons is laughable.

Elaine writes: In the book, I say to vegetarians: do not go on the diet unless you will eat one egg per day or more and some cheese. You can get enough complete protein if you eat these foods. But if you do not, you will have a hard time and it is not healthful with IBD. Please read the book.
I did the diet for about a year and although I'm not a vegetarian I'm not a huge fan of meat (probably eating it only once a week at most) I managed fine on the SCD diet I did eat nuts and lentils in probably larger ammounts than advised with no problems also avocados and plenty of the SCD yoghurt I also made quite a lot of bread from nut flour I made myself from cashew nuts and carrot cake etc I guess it just comes done to what you can tolerate it will be hard at first espically if your not well or already under weight but its not impossible if you want to try it.

Anna, why are you not doing the diet anymore? Are you in remission?

Andrina said... Anna, why are you not doing the diet anymore? Are you in remission? Hi Andrina, Yes I suppose the reason I'm not doing the diet is that I;m actually fine at the momment. My story with SCD is briefly,I was diagonosed 5years ago ( severe hosiptal 2 weeks IV Steriods ) I started SCD a few months after and gradually became OK again then became pregnant and did the SCD all through my pregnancy and was fine after the baby was born I had another massive flare hospital 3 weeks IV steriods, cyclosporin, very nearly lost the colon) so in hospital I could'nt do the diet and was to ill when I came home and lost so much weight my family were not supportive and did'nt want me to continue,so I went the Imuran route.( Although I'm still careful about what I eat I still really believe in SCD but I always urge people to be careful if they are really sick or have other commitments like me young children it was so difficult to concentrate on myself, the diet is difficult and you can often feel worse before you feel better. As far as I know the SCD diet is the only diet that was specifcally invented for UC Elaine Gotschall's daughter was just about to have her colon removed when she started the diet as a last ditch attempt at saving it I don't know if I would have done this, but she basically worked out what worked for her daughter, but for me I'm thinking this is might be key for why it is so sucessful for children and also people with crohns there are even people that believe in it as for autism (the brain gut connection) Also you probably know all this already but I think its interesting Elaine thought it was for fine for people to go back to a normal diet after about two years continuous symptom free to gradually re-introduce complex carbs ( as far as I know Elaine daughter is an adult eating a normal diet and symptom free was at the time the book was published it would be intersesting to know actually) Sorry this has ended up so long winded ! My point was this diet is really trying to fine a solution to UC initally not ended a life commitment but having said that their are plenty of people out there that just stick with it if it works for them ( I also think invidual tweaking is good rather that being too dogmatic)

Bacon Girl said... I dont really know a specific plan for UC but i've always followed 80/10/10 and i just heard about Mcdougall's diet. I just came here looking for a good vegetarian meal plan and then i learned about a fecal transplant.... that's crazy!!! but hey whatever works, some use acupuncture, other people have someone else's poop put into their body
