"Curcumin has been shown to be a good cure for gastric ailments like inflammation and ulceration. While its low doses are not effective, at high doses it might aggravate the situation. But we have come up with the optimum dose at which curcumin is therapeutic," Snehasikta Swarnakar, senior scientist at Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (IICB)`s Drug Development Diagnostic and Biotechnology Division, who led the research, told IANS. Researcher conducted on rats helped in successfully evaluating the optimum dose. "For rats, the proper dose is around 50 mg per kg of their body weight, which is equivalent to 100 mg per kg of body weight in humans," said Swarnakar.

The study, published in 2012 in the Anti-oxidants and Redox Signaling Journal, was also the first to shed light on the exact mechanism by which curcumin aids the healing process. "This is the first study to reveal that the presence of curcumin in the system before or after ulcer development may promote formation of new blood vessels at the site of healing, and restore collagen fibres - the tissue that adds structural strength to body parts," said co-researcher Nilanjana Maulik of the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, Farmington, US. "Curcumin comes to the rescue by regulating the levels of two enzymes involved in the formation of new blood vessels, Swarnakar said. One of the enzymes - MMP-2 - is a house-keeping enzyme that should be present in the system, and the other - MMP-9 - is inflammatory which is not required in the body. "Curcumin increases the levels of MMP-2, while simultaneously lowering the MMP-9 level. This balance between the two enzymes is the key to its actions," Swarnakar said.

That is good news, I was aware that curcumin was

- anti-cancer
- anti-inflammatory
- anti-microbal
- anti-fungal

But I did not know it contributed to the restoration of collagen fibers.

That is great news, I take it every day.

This is probably my next step although I seem to have stumbled onto something else recently that appears to be working - so far. If it continues, I will let everyone know.

garylousiville: Just let us know,please. I know how how you feel,not wanting to say anything unless your are sure  it is working,some may have tried in the past,some need it now,what ever it might be.

If it does not work on everyone, that is normal,and so be it.

Dont know about cucurmin but i feel like turmeric has helped me bigtime over the past week.... Im almost reluctant to add cucurmin so as to not stir the pot but it probably cant hurt... Does anyone know if these two spices go well together in dishes?

Old Mike: OK. A little background:

Came down with UC while in the hospital two years ago for what was thought to be a sinus infection causing migraine headache and uncontrollable fever. Was also on antibiotics. After getting out of hospital it was found out that I actually had Mono - the Epstein Barr Virus. I have found evidence that some people have come down with UC around the same time as contracting Mono and further evidence that some UC patients have the Epstein Barr Virus residing in their colons. I strongly believed that my body's immune system was attacking the virus in my colon, causing inflammation and UC. Unfortunately, there is no known way to irradicate the virus from your body. It dawned on me several months ago that I was falling into the same trap that the doctors do - treating the symptoms instead of treating the real cause. Many don't have any idea what their real cause is but I had some good clues because my UC started at the very same time I was in the hospital. Anyway, a few months ago I began searching for ways to work against the EBV and that led me to among other things, Monolaurin. about 1 month ago I began taking Monolaurin at the smallest dose listed on the bottle. I was a little afraid of getting too sick if it actually started working, due to virus "die off". Unfortunately, I wasn't experiencing die off at all to any degree and was disappointed but still hopeful. After two weeks it just seemed like it wasn't doing anything at all. In about a week I was going to be due to reorder it again and seriously considered forgetting it since it didn't appear to be doing anything at all. I decided that in the third week I would double the dose to the maximum dose listed on the bottle and if nothing happened I would not reorder. After a couple of days I was still experiencing no "die off" but to my amazement, I had a pretty darn good day on the third day. Things started going through my mind and was totally amazed that the very next day also turned out pretty darn good. Two remarkable days in a row. I kept it up and have been doing a lot better than I was but with the increased dosage I was going to run completely out of the medicine before I could reorder so I have been forced to cut back from 6 pills per day to just one until my resupply gets here. I'm still doing better than I was, but not in remission. My new order should get here in the next several days and right now I plan on taking the highest dose on the bottle again for an entire month and see what happens. Monolaurin is an extremely safe supplement and there is not much dosage info available since it is basically a food product. Theoretically you could take as much as you wanted. Anyway, that's it. Monolaurin. I really can't make any claims yet because I have tried things before and had success only to be disappointed in the end but it is very safe and also cheap and anyone wanting to try it probably can't do any harm.

PS: about this same time I blew the dust off of my Slippery Elm which I had quit taking and decided to start taking it at night only, just before bedtime.

Good observation and connection,and interesting.

CMV is also connected with UC,if people have concurrent disease it is much worse.  As you may also know there is a MAP connection,to IBD.

Seems there is also a herpes connection

Interesting 2-3years after my son had his colon out he had a cyst.

They dont find many of these virus.

Anyhow perhaps this is a reason coconut oil helps some people.

Monolaurin is glycerol monolaurate,coconut oil has a high percentage of

glycerol tri-laurate,which I suspect somewhere in the process of digestion

will breakdown into the monolaurate at least for a short period of time.

As far as I know I do not have any herpes but did have mono in 1971,UC

arrived in 1980.  Current IBD theory is centered around bacteria,but who knows for sure. 

Will have to look into virus infections and IBD at bit more.

Old Mike: Thanks for the links. I hadn't seen all of those. Something happened to me while in the hospital and if I ever figure it out 100% I may be on my way to licking this thing. EBV is my main suspect. The antibiotic Levaquin is also a suspect as there is evidence that it can cause colitis, however it always seems to be linked to C-Diff, which I was tested for twice with negative results. Since many have come down with UC and not C-Diff after taking antibiotics, especially certain ones, there may obviously be a connection there that even the experts haven't figured out yet. Another possibility is that in treating me in the hospital for a severe migraine headache I was given high dose Ibuprofin, which has either been linked to IBD or in contraindicated in IBD patients. This was unique to me in the hospital because I always use Tylenol and never Ibuprofin. They switched it in the hospital due to my liver enzymes being elevated. I haven't investigated this angle much. Another longshot is Omeprazole which also has a connection to IBD but I had been taking that for years so it was not unique to me in the hospital. While in the hospital I began having bloody diarrhea (was normal before admission) and all of the doctors didn't pay much attention to my concerns, just chalking it up to the antibiotics. This continued after release from the hospital. My GP changed my antibiotic to a different one but when I continued complaining I was set up for a colonoscopy and the rest is history. While in the hospital and afterwards they did have me taking probiotics.

Well antibiotics and high dose NSAID not a good combo as far as UC
is concerned. You had a lot going on at the time with meds,so perhaps it is up in the air as to the cause. But keep us informed as to what the monolaurin is doing for you.
There are all kinds of articles on virus and colitis on pubmed, while
most have known symptoms to the docs,perhaps something is going
on that they do not know about.
