Positive things because of UC

So, I think about UC a lot. Usually it's about how crappy it is. Recently I was thinking from a different perspective. I was notoriously late every time for every appointment/meeting/etc. Now I'm consciously trying my best to give myself a window of ~30 minutes of free time before an appointment. Now I don't have to deal with the stress of trying to make it on time, and I have 'free time' to do whatever (it's reserved for any potential UC urgency).

UC has also made me more sympathetic towards those who are in pain or sick.

Also, I generally look at food ingredients more than before UC.

How about you all, what are some positive things you got out of UC?

Learning to be dissapointed. How fun. But in theory if it doesnt kill you it makes you stronger.

On the fun side. I now have a spidey sense for public washrooms. I can walk into any place and tell you where the public washroom is if there is one :p

I'm eating more nutritiously and exercising more. These are no longer "options" for me, but mandatory to feel better. Of course, I'm not losing weight b/c of the prednisone, but I'm not gaining either. I am trying to be less vain and more healthy.

Also, dealing with a chronic illness can make you more empathetic. Recently, a good friend had major back surgery and she told me I'm one the few who really understands her frustration and pain. That made me feel good...to help someone else and not be so focused on my UC.

Yeah man, this thread is stupid. It's like asking if you see any positive in getting cancer....

W.T.F. is this. I wish, I never got U.C.

UC has made me a much more compassionate person. It's also forced me to follow a super healthy diet, eliminate unnecessary stressors from my life, and live every minute to the fullest since I know I could wind up housebound again at some point. Not having to worry about every being overweight is a plus, too.

Dude...that would be under the topic...what are you THANKFUL or GRATEFUL for because of UC..which we've had many times..

My response would be...i don't thank it for anything.

Positive could be a different thing, but I agree that there's nothing positive about it having it.

Semantics I guess. Some people feel this is a negative place and that something positive makes their day.
All about perspective.

Regardless...it would make no sense for someone who has chronic disease to make some changes for the better.

This is not like saying what are the positives if cancer. With cancer you have a big chance of death where as UC is more like an annoyance for the rest of your life.

This does tend to be a very negative place, even worse is when a topic like this is started and people feel the need to come in and bash those for trying to give some positive to it. No crap this sucks, but that doesn't mean you can't try and make the best of a bad situation. I'm not saying you should be thankful that you have this, but you know what you do, and moaning and groaning about how bad you are and how you can't see anything positive is only going to make things worse. Sometimes having a good attitude will do wonders for you. Otherwise your going to always be miserable.

So on topic, UC has helped me clean up my diet even more, it has made me really think about what I am putting into my body. It has also made me more aware of my body, and to get things checked when something doesn't feel right. I'd always put stuff off in the past, but now I get it checked right away, which will hopefully help with catching anything major in the future.

At this point, I see my UC as neither negative or positive. It's just something I have to deal with, so I do. I'm not sure how I'd feel if I weren't in remission, though.
