What antibiotics will not take me out of remission with UC?

I am suffering with a sinus infection following the flu last week. My dr put me on SMZ/TMP (Bactrim) for 10 days. I think I've taken this before with not a big problem but here we are on day 3 with major abdominal pain, GI distress, etc. My dr always asks which ABs are okay and I can never remember.

Any suggestions for those that do not wreck your colon? I just got off Lialda a few months ago (in remission)... I have successfully taken the Zithromax 5 day pack but it never knocks out a sinus infection all the way.

I took Bactrim (Septra) with no problems (double course as well)...

Make sure you drink enough water when you take the pill because the med is excreted through the kidneys...if I remember correctly.

You're off Lialda...why?

You need to get on probiotics asap.

Consider to get back on Lialda....and if you're starting to flare, get on rectals as well.

The safest are the Macrolides which are the ones ending with -mycin for example erythromycin, roxithromycin, clarythromycin. The worst are the penicillins and the cephalosporins. When i say best and worst that is related to the risk of causing C Diff- which is probably the worst complication of taking an antibiotic especially for a UCer.
Have you considered going to a good accupuncturist for hebal remedies for sinusitis? Also have you tried doing sinus rinses and netti pots? (Make sure to use previously boiled water, not straight tap water, ofcourse wait for it to cool down).

Have used sinus rinsing daily for the last 5 years since sinus surgery. Twice/day when sick (as presently).

I was surprised dr took me off Lialda but he said no more symptoms means I can wean off. Believe me, I was worried but it worked out okay... I weaned off last fall..... I could start taking it again at least during this sinus infection.

I have been on probiotics twice/day for a couple of years now, haven't stopped those either.

Cannot tolerate Erythromycin.

I have never used the rectals... requested them previously during flare but dr said no. Wondering about my dr now... limited availability in this town.

Take allergy shots every couple weeks. I know this stupid sinus infection is due to the flu I had last week.... and not fungal as things have been cultured previously with these symptoms.

Cannot fight infections well, low immunoglobulins, etc.

It's hard to say.

I personally can't take erythromycin or any of it's derivatives -- I get diarrhea w/in a very short while of taking my first dose (it's not the "typical" antibiotic-associated diarrhea, though; it's some other mechanism that causes it).

And yeah, definitely get back on Lialda -- you shouldn't have gone off in the first place! Also get on a good quality probiotic supplement.
