So I know we have discussed this many times over the years but I want to share MY observation about
the purple stains some of us experience on our toilets....
For me I've always believed it to be the mesalamine drug (or a component of it) as I've been on either Asacol or Mezavant for the past 7 years. The stains started at that time and would be worse when I'd be on maximum dose for symptom relief. I've also observed it was worse depending on the water (
location) when at my home in the city - stains are daily and almost immediate. But in the summer I spend a good month at my sisters and mothers who live in a small town on the east coast.. no staining )of very minimal). So I figure water treatments plants may add different chemicals that react to the mesalamine.
Well I got my proof over the past month. Since starting Remicade, I've dropped and now removed all mesalamine drugs.... and guess what...
...................NO MORE PURPLE STAINS!!!!!! ...............
It is a nice change to not have to bleach the toiled seat every few days.....
Anyway.. just wanted to share my observation :)

When I first started oral Pentasa I didn't have any purple staining at all. For about
2 years, despite continuous oral Pentasa, there were no stains.
Then suddenly, in year 3, I started getting staining... w.t.f?

Lucky you! I notice the stains are worse when flaring. If I use my meds every night while in remission, I don't have too much staining. when I am flaring, it's a daily problem and I have to clean the toilet very often :(

OMG I thought it was just me, my wooden seat is screwed, but each time I replace one it just happens again. I try to clean it but it stains so so badly.

I've given up trying to get the stains off. It is embarassing when company uses my toilet though. Rowasa enemas definately cause the worst staining.

Oh, man. I feel like I can't have guests over unless I clean the toilet first because of this.
Chlorox toilet cleaner works surprisingly well for these stains, at least on my toilet seat.
