So for the past few days my city and surrounding areas have been in a state of emergency. Luckily my area wasn't flooded. Still scary stuff since I was pretty close to being evacuated.

Lord. I've been watching this for days now. Have a family friend who lives in the area.
I hope you're ok! I heard the water is receding, but it'll be awhile til the city and the region is back to normal. Please stay safe and keep us posted.

Hang tight Madcat!
The rest of Canada is watching and sending hugs and strength your way!
I've spend some time out in Canmore/ Bow Valley... so sad to see the damage...
Hoping all settles soon!

That's horrible! I have family that lives in an area that floods every few years. I hope everyone fares well...it won't be an easy cleanup. Stay safe!

Madcat, I didn't realize you lived in Alberta too...luckily I'm just outside of Calgary in an unaffected area and it's been heartbreaking to see my beautiful Calgary drowning....I was born and raised in Calgary but the big boom sent us to Strathmore because I couldn't handle the overwhelming traffic on the roads and in public places (thanks to my being sick with CD).
Things are slowly improving and minimal fatalities as a result of the flooding are good but it's unfortunate that anyone lost their life as a result of this disaster...stay safe!!

A couple of my friends were evacuated from their water front condos. It's crazy. Calgary of all places. Of course, Harper wants to do all he can except for the big elephant in the room with it be Alberta and all. Has nothing to do with environmental issues of course. Hope you and your friends and family stay safe.

I find strange that you see pictures of people smiling while their car is submerged. What a facking idiot. There's nothing to be smiling about
. Probably he knows the insurance will pay for it. Otherwise, yeah, buddy, you just lost 20k....
People weren't smiling here in Quebec when their basements were submerged.

Hearing about
the flooding has certainly been heartfelt. Such devastation and loss....thankfully you (and pb4) weren't affected.
Somedude...what else are they going to do? I'm sure their smiling is a reaction of "what can I do?
I'd definitely freak, however. Others might say "it's ONLY a car". Can never react appropriately I guess.
My city had a flash flooding of too much rain in a short period of time in a relatively newly developed/changed area. Sewers were overloaded and people's cars and basements were flooded. Even IKEA got the brunt of it. Missed my area completely...weird how weather works.
Every day is a white-knuckler when thunderstorms are predicted...looking forward to the next few days here...NOT.
I agree...stay safe everyone!

Yeah, I'd freak too. Of course, it won't change anything, freaking out, but to me it's the most natural response.

I'm a "freaker-outer"...get that from my mom -- which by the way I HATED when she did that.
I love my car..lol...I'd be p'd majorly.
I was even saying to my husband about
seeing the people in IKEA walking on the floor with their sandals/shoes. It's so hard for me to find stuff to fit and can be expensive....my mephistos or eccos als would have been in my hand and I would have been in my bare feet going to my car. Just the thought of throwing out $170ish would upset me...not only that, to have to search for another.
Speaking of flooding...to some, that may be shallow. Perspective is everything.

Somedude, for all you know they were having issues with their car anyway and maybe that's why they were smiling....so easy to make assumptions based on little info isn't it. Not to mention, maybe they were happy that they and their family is safe and would rather see their vehicle suffer the consequences which to some people is better than losing a family/pet or their own life...there are different perspectives during disasters you know. And not everyone reacts the same way during the same disaster either...there's no fault in that. Don't judge a book by it's cover....smiling on the outside doesn't necessarily mean happy on the inside.

Thanks Q, I'm glad we haven't been affected either...it's bad enough seeing the devastation all around us, should be very interesting to see if they can get the Stampede up and running in time for July 5th, it's quite a mess there and the Saddledome has been flooded quite badly. One thing's for sure, they're very optimistic about
getting it cleaned up in time, though I have my personal doubts on that.

No, Strathmore has no flooding (we no longer live there, we moved closer to the city as Strathmore was a bit too far for hubby to drive to work from) but my adult kids still have friends out in Strathmore and they've had no issues...the siksika nation is in big trouble on their reserve though.

My niece who goes to university in Ontario is currently doing a 4-month work term in Calgary. She started in May. At the end of May the house she was renting a room in burnt down! She got out with only her cell phone and the pyjamas she was wearing. She has been slowly replacing all her ID, a lot of clothes were donated to her, her dad (my brother) flew out there to help her get settled into a new rental.
And then this month the flooding! For a while she thought she'd have to abandon everything again, but luckily turns out her area did not have to be evacuated. However her job is downtown so she's been off work. Even when the buildings re
open, I hear transit may not be up and running for a while?? She takes transit to work so I'm not sure what is going to happen there.
We keep saying - what is next for her? Locusts??

Transit into the downtown core isn't running yet and likely won't be until a significant amount of clean up is done, it's pretty nasty everywhere that flooded, lots of mud/dirt and debris all over the place...they are hopeful to get it ALL cleaned up as soon as possible so that's good.

I am amazed they say the Stampede will go on ahead as scheduled and that's in only a couple of weeks. Looks to me like that will take an enormous amount of work to get everything cleaned up and on track in time, but I guess where there is a will there is a way!

Ya, on the news at noon they showed the grounds and it's pretty much all clear of flood water...the Stampede is using their own resources for the clean up (not taking any resources away from other parts of the city) and they are working like mad down there, being about
2ish weeks away I think they will pull it off...which is good because the city needs that revenue they pull in from the Stampede every year.

When I heard the Mayor talking it sounding like Stampede was more important to clean up than anything else haha! I'm kinda of angry that alot of my friends don't have work since they're in downtown but I do since i'm not :(.

Just heard from my niece that they won't be able to get back to their office until NEXT TUESDAY! That is wild. Somebody is going to be able to go in, however, and will bring her work computer to her so she can do some stuff at home.

Yup, there's parts of downtown they figure won't be hooked back up with electricity and gas for possibly as long as months due to the damage done...some parts got it worse than others, closer to the bow river the worse off those areas are.

I'm in Northern Illinois and we've had flood warning for days. I haven't seen the sun for 4 days! We've been raining for weeks. Everything is green but the sump pump is going off every 6 minutes and I'm waiting for my foundation to crack and leave me flooded. I'm grateful I don't live too close to the Rock River. Also, grateful I'm not getting the heat they have in the west.
I'm dog sitting and the poor dog got into my car and won't leave. Maybe he feels more secure there or maybe he thinks if he stays there I'll take him home. He looks so forlorn. He Pooped on my floor yesterday during a thinderboomer, poor baby.
