Trying to figure out the connection if there is one to the change in BM odor and change in health. My 17yr old daughter who has suffered for 3 years today had a strange odor in the bathroom. We have noticed it before in the past. It's pungent, not like the normal odor. Very strong. She's had a change in her UC condition, more mucus and looks like lumps of tissue. Anyone have experience with the odor change?

Oh - and should also mention that I get this anytime I have something like whole grain, or whole wheat. Certain breads, cereals or muffins. It's pretty foul.
So maybe this was part of the issue. Perhaps ask her if she had any of these before the change. Then try eliminating them for a few days and see what happens.

Hey there,
about
5 months after I was diagnosed, my stools began smelling foul! I was convinced I had c-diff, since c-diff (I've heard) is decidedly foul-smelling, but no--it was actually giardia. Yup, on top of my UC symptoms I also had acquired a parasite! So, yeah, a change in odor was definitely indicative of a problem, for me at least...
Hope that info helps a little--might be time for a stool sample just to be on the safe side--
Ta and thx and take care,
Lisa

Absolutely! And then when that foul odor disappears I know I'm getting better again.
It's like something is growing in there and I don't want to know what it is.

When I was first diagnosed the smells were bad. For the last few years I have had the exact opposite problem - hardly any smells at all.

When my UC tries to flare up, what I notice is that my stools don't smell fecal at all - they have a bit of a sweet smell. When I get a foul smell, it's most often because I ate something my IBS hates. Like too much fiber.
