suck it up, girl!! it's just a prep. if you don't like the one she gave you, go out and buy some miralax and dulcalax at the drug store. i'm almost positive you don't need a prescription for those. as long as you are cleaned out, you can just lie and say you did the golightly prep. i just tell them i do the prep even though i haven't for my last five colonoscopies.

that's what i said. my mom said absolutely not. and i'm sorry if it sounds like i'm whining... i have aspergers and don't cope well with change or things that don't make sense in my brain and this doesn't make sense in my brain. i don't understand why i can't do what i know works and i don't understand why i have to take this medicine that seems to make everyone vomit.

That prep is horrible but with that said you just have to do it so you can get your scope and get it over with.

Going forward, if you have to do another one, ask about the Gator Ade/Miralax prep. It goes down much easier. (if you like the taste of gator ade!) I was a big puker too with the golightly but the gator ade and miralax prep was so much more tolerable. Good luck.

Sorry but screw them. You are not whining, you are asking for help. I have been getting at least one scope for uc every year for over 30 years. Google miralax/ducolax prep and use it. It goes down sooo much easier. It gets the results the Dr needs. It takes the stress away from you. Some people simply can not tolerate the so called golytly. What good is it if you puke it up? If you Google it and mom sees it is the new standard and mainstream she should be okay. I wonder if these Dr's who insist on prescribing preps get something in return for x amounts prescribed?

The nurse in the hospital is the one that gave me the option and supplied me with an entire bottle of it. The only down side is there is that much more to drink, hence the 6 hours it took me.

I would do the prep that you're comfortable with and ignore the nurse. As long as you're cleaned out enough for them to do the scope what difference does it make? The ducolax and miralax are over the counter and much easier to get down than the golightly. I feel like at this stage of the game I can basically design my own prep and I've had doctors tell me how "clean" I was for the scope so I wouldn't worry about it. Good Luck!

I hope I didn't offend any nurses here because that was not my intention. I actually go to one of the bigger and better practices in all of Louisville (OK we're not NYC or LA here). This group and particularly this doctor has been recommended to me as one of the best in the area by several different sources. There are probably about 7 doctors in the group, all of whom keep tremendously busy. There may or may not be nurses in the practice, I really don't know but, I have never been introduced to a nurse or told to contact a nurse if I had any problems. I was not only responding to the OP's dilemma but remembering other people's problems here who have had troubles in being satisfied with a nurse's response to a situation. In this particular case I would be pissed off if I contacted the nurse requesting a different prep and they just blew me off. That's not an unreasonable request whatsoever. They can't even prescribe a prep themselves so it's not really their decision. If I need any help after office visits, I contact the office, who passes on my problem to my doctor, who in turn decides the response and has an office person contact me back with his response so the doctor makes the decisions, not a nurse. I have a great respect for nurses but when I need help from a doctor I want help from the doctor, not a flunkie who can't even prescribe what I might need. Seems like in a lot of the countries where they have a national health system they have fewer doctors and a lot of nurses you have to deal with instead. No offense but I want to deal with the doctor. Not a nurse. I and my insurance companies pay thousands of dollars to GI specialists and what they prescribe for a reason. We're paying for the care of specialists. If we are going to be cared for by the nurses they should charge us less money.

I found that mixing the golytely with chicken broth made it much more tolerable (sine you often expect soups to be salty). I warmed the chicken broth in the microwave and then drank it out of a mug just like soup. I tried the first cup on it's own and couldn't tolerate it, but once I mixed in a few ounces of chicken broth it went down without any problem.

If you eat jello try taking a bite of jello afterwards to get rid of the taste. thats what I did back when I took it. That and popsicles.

I thought about addressing nurse practitioners in my post but didn't. A nurse practitioner is basically one step below a doctor. I have no problem with them since they can prescribe meds but if I am paying all that money for a specialist I don't want to talk to a regular nurse about things I should be talking to a doctor about. Several of my doctor's offices have nurse practitioners, although I don't know about my GI's office. I want to say again that I have nothing against nurses at all but when I want to talk to the doctor I want to talk to the doctor, not some IBD nurse. I also want to reiterate that the OP's request to this nurse should have been forwarded to the doctor instead of the nurse deciding on her own to just blow off the patient's reasonable request.

Oh dancer. I just wanted to add to the comments that you should do what prep you want if the nurse ignored you. It's worked before, it will work again.

You CAN mix the golightly with things (broth, apple juice, any non-red clear liquid). What does your mom think is happening when they reach your stomach/intestines???

I've heard that a hard candy chaser helps (just suck on it for a bit).
