What do inflamitory drugs do to kidneys?

dmc2001, if you are talking about your apriso then it is mostly topical (about 90%) so only a small percentage is absorbed and finds its way to your liver. The topical part goes in the toilet when you poop. meslamines can change the color of your pee (active ingredient in apriso) so I assume we just pee the remaining 10% out.

I don't believe there is any danger at least not in the dosages we are prescribed. Initially your gi looks for meslamine intolerance, but there is generally no need to watch the liver closely with meslamine/anti-inflammatories.

Plus, your GI does kidney function testing regularly, so that will keep tabs on what's going on. I wouldn't worry about that just yet.

Ok thanks! I just read a randum snippet someplace that said "anti-inflamitories damage kidneys" so I thoght about us!

Yes, there have been some who have had sudden onset kidney disease from 5ASA meds. It's obvious that probably salicylates are a never for them.

The 5ASA we use are topical, not systemically dispersed.

It is possible, that some with kidney disease might have already had an issue...hard to know.

My cat...when she was placed on Metacam to deal with her interstitial cystitis, her urea levels jumped in 2 weeks. We took her off it immediately. She does have kidney failure progressing, but at that time we did try it. Since then..the plan has changed many times, but it's not an option we'd ever consider again.

Blood tests are our friends...just make sure your doc checks for kidneys, urea, etc.

Your GI can test for proteins in your urine for kidney's affected by 5ASA's. If your ankles start to swell then that is an indication. I'm one of those very small percentage, lucky enough to get kidney disease from 5ASA's. I was undiagnosed for 7 years so it's hard for me to get into remission. I've seen a couple of others, they caught it right away and they have no kidney issues now.

Great day !! My ankles swelled up so bad last month, had to go to a same day clinic. The doc sent me for an ultrasound to check for clots. Then I was to get an X-ray to check for arthritis, but the day before, I broke my leg. So now I will ask to get my kidneys checked.

Beth, what other symptoms did you have?

I asked my GI, he said there is no relation with the Kidney and the mesalamine.
I'm concerned too, because I had blood in the urine and the urine test revealed RBC in the urine. They suspected kidney stones.
Yesterday I had a ultrasound and X ray but nothing revealed the presence of kidney stone.
And the urologist said everything looks normal. And he guesses the kidney is not inflamed as well. I asked then what is the reason? He said you might have had kidney stone but you have passed out in the urine. Whhhh What?? In one day blood in the urine and then no more!! and on the same day stone came out? I have asked for a follow up to check the kidney function and the urine test!!!

Beth, What were your symptoms when you were diagnosed with kidney disease? Is there a name for this kidney disease?

I have also had urine problems. The doctors can't find a reason why. I had maroonish orange urine one time along with some nasuea weakness and dizziness. I went to the ER and they did bloodwork and everything was fine except blood in urine and a cat scan that was normal. They decided to change my medication from Apriso to colazal and so far I have not seen blood again. My urine test however shows trace amount but I think that can be normal for some people.
