Abstract

Grape seed extract (GSE) is a by-product of the wine industry, with abundant polyphenolic compounds known for their anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects. Using IL10-deficient mice (IL10KO), here we showed that GSE (1% of dry feed weight) ameliorated inflammatory bowel disease indices, increased colonic goblet cell numbers and decreased myeloperoxidase levels in the large intestine. Concomitantly, GSE supplementation attenuated inflammation, decreased the expression of pore forming tight junction protein claudin2, and increased levels of Lactobacilli and Bacteroides in the gut microbiota of IL10KO mice. In summary, our study shows that GSE has protective roles on inflammatory bowel disease through altering gut inflammation, tight junction protein expression, and gut microbiota composition.

I've read good things about GSE but could never find a supplement that didn't have other chemicals in it. I have no dog in this fight but there was some negative press a few years ago and even though I bought some never took it.

This is what I remember:

I'd like to hear some opinions about how safe the current supplements are and if anyone takes it with no side effects.

Could be dangerous stuff, my son was taking quite a bit, caused both ankles to swell, something to
do with liver toxicity. Watch it.

Your link is Grapefruit Seed extract (GFSE), not Grape Seed Extract (GSE):-)

Qing Dai study got people off prednisone.

I have GSE and many other that are anti-inflammatory, its a long list. Personally Qing Dai was the most noticeable as I began lifting weights again.

Ordered more Qing Dai.

Grape seed seems to work for GaryLouville. I have been taking it sporadically for years, (I take everything at least once), but don't know its effectiveness because never took it alone.

Still working but no complete remission. It is however, one of the best things I have discovered in helping me. I now live an almost normal life.

After reading this thread months ago I bought some GSE pills (not GFSE) and tried it. The first couple days it created IBS symptoms of multiple BM's but after that it settled down. It's in my "keeper" list of supplements (a very short list because my gut hates most supplements.

I don't take as much as garylou, usually one a day at bedtime, but sometimes one in the morning too. I'd like to know what dosage has been tested in humans (not rates) as effective for inflammation. Anyone have a study about human tests?
