Or perhaps these things have a profound effect on butyrate producing bacteria as I think you stated in regards to farting your way to health.
I'll post more later when I have time, but in my textbook the other night I was learning about
two things:
1) There's a counter bacteria to butyrate bacteria - they live off the byproducts of the butyrate metabolism or the "waste". This brings balance to the system like in sewage systems and such. I'll have to finish the chapter to understand more and post in more detail, but an increase or decrease in these might have some profound effects.
2) Bacteria Flagella - When bacteria form biofilms on hard surface or surfaces in general they group together - some become "swimmers" and some become "swarmers". When they want to move as a group or cling in in high flow places the swarmers I believe it said grow flagella by the thousands and use these to move and hang on. I want to re-read this chapter maybe tomorrow night though to make sure I understood it correctly. Anyway, there was that post flagella a few days ago and this came to mind. You could probably read about
it if you googled "bacterial swarming" perhaps.
The whole reason I even mention it is that it touched on the fact that when bacteria go into swarm mode, they product emulsifiers... and this made me thing about
bacterial biofilms, mucus breakdown and the 10,00 biopsy paper.
Let me read some more - or learn some more really and I'll type out what it says if interested in regards to emulsifiers.
EDIT: Here's a cool link to the "motor" of a Flagella that I found tonight
www.life.illinois.edu/crofts/bioph354/lect16&17.html Scroll to the bottom of the page and you'll see the diagram. More so some have a "clutch" as well - so forward and reverse - these are generally pathogenic bacteria.
