Bright red blood??

Do you know what might be causing the occasional large amount of bright red blood on the tp? I'm four months into my first flare in over ten years and don't remember ever having blood like this.

I'm at 20 mg. prednisone, balsalazide and mesalamine enemas and the light bleeding and even urgency will stop for a few days then bam bright red blood. I'm guessing it could be something I ate. Scrambled eggs with bratwurst and cheddar?? or chocolate frangos. I'm thinking that's the importance of a food diary. Even had 2 beers the other night and no problem.

I'm just starting to have no bleeding on some days. It's always an unpleasant surprise when the blood shows up again. I definitely attribute mine to food. The biggest culprit being dairy at the moment.

You have the right idea about making up a food diary.

Thanks Lodi. The doc said bright red could mean colon cancer but I'm going to hope it's connected to diet.

I'm mostly gluten and dairy free but will start writing it all down, of course every day is different.

I have left sided UC and you're right could be internal hemmies. Had them years ago, even external thrombosed hemmys that required surgery, ugh!

I sometimes have a little pain and pressure. I guess I'll find out when I have a colonoscopy in a couple months. My brother has stage 4 colon cancer and I haven't had a colonoscopy in over 10 years since I've been symptom free since then....not too wise of me.

If your colon is flaring near its exit (i.e. ulcerative proctitis), you will see red blood on the TP as well as in the toilet. That's always been one of my main symptoms from UC.

It's not the food.

Take a look-see with a mirror and it's possible you have a fissure.

Did you recently taper the prednisone?

Do you have blood around the stool or in the toilet?

Weird your doctor would say "it could be cancer"....as in remiss! Did he suggest to do a scope and biopsies to make sure it's NOT cancer?

Darker blood is more worrisome than bright red. Bright red usually means it came from the rectum or towrd the end of the GI tract. It's fresh and red. A lot of the time it's from hemmies or a fissure. Have you checked for these things? I had a very pesky fissure that bled a TON. it was very bright red. I really dount it has anything to do withs omething you ate. Merry xmas.

I seem to have the same problem, my first flare is gradually getting better but about 50% of the time I also see bright red blood on the toilet paper, not sure what it is, gonna give it a little more time considering I have only been out of the hospital for about 2 weeks from first being diagnosed, hope you get it figured out dawn!
