update

Still sitting in hospital. haven't even seen GI yet...supposedly today. But they said my cdiff is negative and they are tapering flagyl and c. Diff and giving me lits if wonderful pain meds. Been on liquids since Friday night and they just gave me potatoes to try....10 minutes later running to the bathroom in pain...even with the meds. But at least the pain stopped when I was done...except my poor sore butt lol! Soooo hungry but just a few bites are sitting like rocks in my stomach...lost so much weight I guess my body finds eating weird.

Ugg I can't believe their idea if a good liquid diet was colored jello, corn syrup ice pops, and juice with weird aftertaste and more corn syrup. I'm not used to that nonsense! Much rather have the potato! Hopefully they don't take it and the GI comes soon with some solutions. Tired if crying and hurting.

Thanks for the update. I guess it's good news that the C-Diff cleared up. I hope they tested well enough because the test can have a lot of false negatives. Sometimes they do 3 seperate tests on 3 seperate stool samples to make sure of the results. You may want to ask about that. Hope they figure it out.

So has he changed your meds at all? Your Lialda should be increased and you should be on rectal meds.

He "doesn't think you're that bad off?" Gosh, I'd fire him on the spot. You're in the hospital!

Rectal meds are not for those who are "bad off." They are for everyone with UC. Using rectal mesalamine combined with oral has been shown in several studies to be the most effective way to treat this condition. Your DR needs to be reeducated.

Ugg. I was doing so good this morning...blood was gonna while on liquids....ate some baked fish and mashed potatoes, now I'm back to the bathroom straining with diarhhea and blood again.

Yeah he came in here and announced that the c.diff was on my biopsy but not on my samples so just treated me. Which is not what his nurse told me....she just said I had c.diff and needed antibiotics to get it under control.

Just found out he put in bentyl for me today too...which I mentioned when I got here I reacted to it. They gave it to me twice today under a generic name just saying it was for inflammation. I've been fine on it so maybe the reaction was a fluke, but that's still crazy to me that the nurse couldn't find any note about a reaction. I feel like, I'm already confused right now, why are they making it worse.

My GI seemed so friendly and caring at first...I feel a bit betrayed. Even today when he was lecturing me to be patient, he was friendly and trying to reassure me. And now this evening nurse probably thinks I'm crazy.....telling her I can't take bentyl when it seems I've had it all day. Then I think one entered my pain meds wrong. This morning I had a light dosage of morphine, it quit working, they gave me something stronger that was real nice. She's saying it was the other way around according to the log. Uggg. I'm not crazy but I'm starting to feel that way! Glad I'm going home tomorrow....gotta get other thoughts on all this.

Oh mars, sounds rough! When my pain was really bad for a few days there too I wanted to go to the hospital. It was not fun. Last night was another one of those nights. Lots of pain, ice packs and crying. Got a couple hours of sleep then up every 30 minutes for diarrhea.

Just keep taking your meds and resting. Honestly if you are on a enough pain that they will give you morphine then your GI needs a kick in the face. I know I couldn't walk into my ER and get morphine without actually being in serious pain!

I know it might sound like im minimizing things but honestly what I think you need is to consistently take your lialda (don't skip pills or take a less dosage again!) As prescribed. Ask for rectal if you can get them. And REST. I know... sounds trivial... but I think resting when I need to rest is what is keeping me going.

I take naps when im tired. I occasionally take tylenol pm to try to get some sleep at night. Last night i had to because of the pain. I wore a depends to bed incase the meds made me too sleepy to get up quick enough. (Glad I did!)

I drink water even when I dont want to. Usually mix it with a little Gatorade powder. Saltines and pretzels get me through the nausea and help a little with the hunger.

On the toilet I breath deep. I cry out if I need to... Myth busters proved that you can deal with pain slightly better if you swear :D im def a crazy sailor in the bathroom, lol. But once the poop is out and if there is spasms after, painful dry heaving, I concentrate super hard on breathing in big and deep and breathing out slow and fully. It helps the spasms.

I'm going to try and figure out another GI to see and make some choices. I did see my GI this morning and he further explained I wasn't bad in rectal area and that's why he feels they are pointless for me or he would have done them right away. He upped the lialda and is giving me a sleep aide for bad nights so I won't be so tired and stressed. He told me to look into guided meditation. We also had a nice long talk about when to freak out about blood and when not to lol. They will be releasing me in a couple hours.

The one and only time I was hospitalized I had my GI's associate come in and see me because it was the weekend and the associate was on call. All I can say is that I am glad that he was NOT my normal GI because he made me feel the same way, like what was I doing there?? Um well my CT scan showed my whole large intestine was inflamed, I was in excruciating pain and I was covered in hives! Some docs can be real jerks. You know it's not all in your head so don't let them make you feel otherwise.

Man, I so totally do NOT understand why doctors won't prescribe rectal meds if you ask for them. It makes no sense to me.

wifeofmars, near the top of the thread you say that your butt hurts -- if you mean that you have localized pain at the anus, I can't recommend Balneol and Calmoseptine enough. I had a lot of irritation from so many bathroom trips, and I was afraid I had a hemmie or a fissure, so I saw a rectal surgeon and he suggested those two and I feel SO much better.

Also, if you're straining, please consider using a fiber supplement like Konsyl. It helps you have formed stool, so you have less diarrhea, and it moves stool through your intestines efficiently so you don't find yourself straining. Straining is so bad for you and it usually indicates either that you have constipation or that you have tenesmus. Either way, the Konsyl will help. I take it twice daily in a larger than normal dose and yeah, makes a big difference. I can really tell if I skip a day.

Konsyl isn't cheap, but I've found it's less expensive on its website than at Walgreen's. Also, if you order it on their website, they send you a shaker cup.

There's original and there's flavored. The thing with the flavored is that there's less fiber in each dose. I take the original and I mix it with vitamin water (actually, half refrigerated vitamin water and half tap water -- for me that's the optimal mix of flavor and temperature). You have to shake it really well and then down it fast or it turns into glue.

I think both balneol and calmoseptine are used for post-birth healing, so maybe you have something like the balneol as well. Take good care. Here's hoping for a positive 2014!
