Actually, most people don't have the slightest clue on how to interpret them (doctors included). That's where the problem lies and it's the sole reason why drugs are so profitable. By law, studies cannot be altered but pharmaceutical companies can circumvent this by 1) weeding out those with adverse reactions in the early arms 2) writing out any adverse effects. Both practices are fairly common and the reason why drugs get recalled.
Relative risk reductions are the reason why 75% or more of Americans are on statins and other drugs when they don't need to be. This presents an ethical and moral dilemma that needs to be taken head on.
