going to a resort in Mexico next month, looking into Dukoral,
Does anyone know of any issues with UC or specifically with Remicade... I'm researching and will ask my doc. but thought you guys may have some experience with this...
I am in full remission, and it is a 5star resort, but still one can never be too careful

If you are in full remission I don't think I would mess around with that. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

seems like you're on your own -
maybe go to Alaska instead
oh, and stay away from cruise ships - I heard they can be hazardous to your life !

Oral vaccines are almost always live vaccines. Live vaccines are contraindicated with Remicade. I wouldn't take it.
What other drugs could interact with Dukoral?
There may be an interaction between cholera and travellers' diarrhea vaccine and any of the following:
•encapsulated oral typhoid vaccine (do not take within 8 hours of each other)
•immunosuppressants (e.g., azathioprine, cyclosporine, prednisone, dexamethasone, etanercept, infliximab, tacrolimus, sirolimus)
•other vaccines and medications taken by mouth (do not take other medications 1 hour before and 1 hour after this vaccine)
If you are taking any of these medications, speak with your doctor or pharmacist.

Not sure if this helps Canadagal...I'm on IVIG & I was thinking of going to Cuba over Xmas. I asked my GI about
Dukoral as well. He spoke with a tropical disease specialist to see if I could take it with IVIG. He agreed it was safe. You need to start taking it 3 weeks before travel. I'd check with yr GI & maybe ask her/him to ask around as well. I didn't end up going because I started flaring.
May I ask if yr still taking spinach/sunflower seeds? I eat spinach 3x a week...not enough to make a difference I guess.

it's my travel buddies that brought it up this weekend, I'd still have just enough time, but inof is limited on line. I did read the parts that it can have interaction (one place seems to indicate if anything it is rendered less effective by Remi. ) but what little info out there still seems to me to indicate it is ok and even encouraged in IBD patients... but always followed with talk to doc or pharmasist. I do have an email in to my GI (he's pretty good about
responding via email surprisingly!) and I see my fam. doc on friday (cutting it close by then though).
I'm just really surprised not more people on here have experience with it... WE would definately want to AVOID getting a tummy bug that causes SEVERE DIARRHEA for 4 days...
ANyway, still hoping others will chirp in on the subject. I'll update with my decision and outcome eventually...
Also rbartolo, no, not a daily eater of spinach/sunflower anymore... it didn't do anything during last year's very bad flare, so gave up on it... I do eat both often just cause I like them but not daily like before.

Canadagal: The other option my doc suggested was to take an antibiotic & probiotic at the same time while there. The antibiotic part seems a bit risky but might be a good idea to take the probiotic if you aren't already...and carry an antibiotic with you just in case.
This post reminds me of Sex & the City where Charlotte only ate pudding cups on her trip to Mexico...inadvertently had a sip of water & popped herself:)
By chance are you in Toronto? (Like me)

It seems to be a Canadian drug, so perhaps not available in the US.

A ha! that would explain it Judy, you are right... not available in US unless prescribed as cholera for destination travel...
It is readily available without prescript
ion here in Canada (no rbartolo, I'm near the Ottawa region not TO).
My GI wrote back and said it was safe with Remi. I think I might give it a try. It is not a live vaccine, but an inactive one...
If it can help prevent getting sick, which would be NO FUN but also a concern regarding setting off a flare.. then I think I'll chance it.
I'll let you all know on here how it goes in case others wonder about
this in the future
