Hi Guardian7,
Do you mean a magnesium citrate supplement? I just purchased a bottle to help with constipation but don't know how much is safe to take and how often. I read that too much magnesium causes malabsorption and electrolyte imbalance, and I've never really calculated how much I already get from food. I eat black beans, bananas, almonds (ground, not whole) and cashews but don't eat wheat or grains. How much magnesium citrate do you take? Thanks!
I think the upper bound on any kind of magnesium (though not oxide because of low bioavailability) is just below the dosage that loosens the bowels. The daily recommended amount is somewhere from 200-400 mg. I think you are safe with that. Elemental is probably the safest form to take.
Too much citrate can be problematic though.
Here's a good scientific review on magnesium and how to take. Explains it far better than I can.
