FDA warning concerning probiotic or yeast supplements

This was posted on the Crohns Board. Personally I have no idea the source or well anything, but maybe it's something to look into or keep an eye out for other warnings. OR just in case someone is taking this particular supplement on the board here.

This is a partial FDA-issued warning concerning use of these types of products. I thought I'd pass it along considering many here use similar products and we can fall into that "immunocompromised" category.

"Dietary Supplements Containing Live Bacteria or Yeast in Immunocompromised Persons: Warning - Risk of Invasive Fungal Disease

AUDIENCE: Health Professional, Pediatrics , Internal Medicine, Consumer

ISSUE: FDA is warning health professionals of the risks associated with the regarding use of dietary supplements containing live bacteria or yeast in immunocompromised persons. A premature infant administered a dietary supplement, ABC Dophilus Powder (Solgar), as part of in-hospital course of treatment, developed gastrointestinal mucormycosis caused by the mold Rhizopus oryzae and died. Rhizopus oryzae mold was found to be present as a contaminant in an unopened container of the ABC Dophilus Powder, which is formulated to contain three species of live bacteria."

The key word here is "in immunocompromised persons" Sometimes, FDA issues warnings which are not accurate as FDA is infested with many drug company pimps who oppose natural remedies and herbs who are atleast partially effective thus have potential to allow use of lower doses of expensive drugs. This is not good for billion dollars profits of big pharma. I would say..the best thing is to use natural forms of probiotics and they do help and have been proven effective in randomized,controlled trials.
