I guess 23andme and pfizer are doing a study of uc, crohn's, and ibd patients. Essentially, they are giving the 23andme test away free of cost. You still get the results the same, but they are anonymously shared.

I sent my results in a few weeks ago and got them back. It's definitely worth it! The whole process is totally free. You also get to see your ancestry and a really detailed breakdown of where your genes came from. Best/easiest way to help further ibd research.

Kazbern - I hope you get in. I did it a couple of months ago and it was really cool to see my ancestry. I did not know that I had Ashke**** Jewish in my background - interestingly enough, I've read that is one of the groups that UC is more common with.

They used to give more health statistics with it, but had to phase that out - I was a little disappointed in that, but could see why telling someone what % chance they have of getting different diseases could be an issue.

The worst case scenario is that unlike IBDers in the U.S. you won't be able to get it free but will have to pay $100. like everyone else.

Nobody cares about you Canadians, wait, I'm Canadian. This isn't fair at all! We should protest, but we're too lazy and polite. I like that this type of research is taking place though, it gives me hope.

You could easily use a fake name if you are worried about privacy. The required questionnaire takes a couple minutes. The tons of additional questionnaires are optional.

I received the kit but i never returned it. I decided it didn't make sense to provide this company with my genetic information. I would like to help out but it's not blind, they have my name and information. I did a study at a university nearby that was blind and I provided saliva...

Were I 20 and had many years and a career ahead of me I may have thought different but, at 60 years old...

It's never too late. I am 63 and of course it would have been nice to know 40 years ago that I might eventually have a tendency to be sensitive to gluten. But my DNA analysis indicated that I might also be a candidate for problems with my thyroid, which really blindsided me.

I have been avoiding salt to keep my blood pressure in the normal range. Seaweed can trigger a flare for me so I even have to avoid multivites with iodine derived from kelp. (I still cannot believe that a multivite with kelp extract can give me problems, we are talking micrograms here. But even minute amounts of kelp can cause problems for me.)

So I may very well have had a deficiency of iodine which is necessary for the thyroid. So I found a potassium iodide supplement. And I found several studies that show a strong link between Hashimoto’s and Graves’ with gluten intolerance.

I'm 22 and honestly the disease sucks so bad that I would rather help potentially move our collective understanding of IBD forward and accept the risk of possible misuse of data. If we could have a more definitive answer to what the genetic component/risk factors for the disease are, I think that's worth it for the good of everyone with IBD even if it may or may not put my information at risk. I respect others' right to make that decision for themselves, though.

Just hope that if my data is sold to China and used to make superhuman clones that at least I could get a cut of the check :)
