Anyone develop a food allergy in adulthood? Med related?

Anyone developed a food allergy all of the sudden? I had an allergic reaction to shellfish at the beach. I really didn't think much of it at the time. I already had an appt. w/ my primary yesterday so I casually mentioned it. She informed me that I had not taken it seriously enough. Opps. She said being on pred probably helped (I took Benadryl at the time too). I did some general allergy bloodwork and was given Epi pens.

I was just randomly thinking could this be all related to UC or the meds? Looking for a tie-in to why at almost 39 I could have food allergies.

My son has terrible indoor/outdoor allergies so at least we have a great allergist if I need one. Hopefully was just a fluke.

Hope all are well. I'm still on Entyvio but back on pred.

most likely from leaky gut and your over active immune system. my allergy doc said he sees a TON of IBD patients with all sorts of allergies after they have been diagnosed.

I read adult allergy development is common. Causes are not completely understood. Likely it is not related or UC or medications. But more likely to be your immune system than meds. Whatever genes you have making you more disposed to auto-immune, may also be involved in hyper-immune response to food.

I have a couple of food allergies, and it seems like many food intolerances, its very difficult to deal with at times, and so I am just hoping that they may simply go away one day. I didn't realize the connection was IBD, I thought this problem was somehow connected to Gluten intolerance for some reason, so that's good to know.

I'm shocked I have none, I have lactose intolerance but that's different from allergy...I hope I never develop a food allergy either, that would suck...sorry you're dealing with that pink, I love shellfish and it would suck to be allergic to it especially with having gut or other health issues.

I haven't been formally allergy-tested, but certain foods cause severe joint pain, most of all - corn. This is totally new to me. I've also recently had an itchy mouth after eating shrimp - also new.

Thanks everyone for your input! I will be interested to see what the bloodwork says. Hopefully they will call today. I see my GI in 2 weeks so I can ask him his thoughts on it then as well.

The last two times I ate salmon my face got so swollen I could hardly open my eyes. The first time it happened I was 23 and the second time I was 36. My doctor told me I am not allowed to eat it again without having an epi pen handy. I was tested for food allergies and salmon didn't show up, but my doctor thi ha it has to do with cross reactions.

In this NBC news story they are talking about food allergies. They say that there has been a dramatic increase since 1997...
1997 is the first year of widespread implementation of Roundup Ready soybeans and cotton, in other words GMO soy and cotton.
