can't beat mild flare

Hi,
I've been 4 months fighting a mild flare with max dose mesalamine oral and rectal but I think I'm going to lose because I'm having blood and mucus these last week, every day. My next appointment with my GI is next week but I'm thinking in calling my GI tomorrow. I don't want to bother him but what's the point of waiting?. I'm not going to get better but I might continue getting worse. Should I call? What could I expect, what would be the next step for a mild (supposedly proctitis) flare that I can not beat with mesalamine?

Yes, if you're backsliding/getting worse, then most certainly call your gastroenterologist and update him/her on your symptoms.

What else might you ask for/try? Steroid enemas or suppositories, immunosuppressive medications (Imuran, 6mp, aza).

Yes call. Don't ever feel bad about bothering your doctor, it's their job. If they can't fit you in earlier than so be it, but at least you tried. Have your questions ready for him/her and maybe know what you might want to try next if the mesalamines aren't doing their job.

I doesn't hurt to call but don't expect any earth shattering advice (maybe pred?). They might even say stay the course for now because we're seeing you next week anyway. Are you doing any probiotics, supplements, or diet changes?

I would call and see if you can get steroid enemas. They work well and impact your whole body less than prednisone. Hope you feel better soon.

Absolutely call!
I second the steroid enemas. Try them first before prednisone.

As well...request a stool sample testing kit.

Agree with steroid enemas. And call now. In my experience, letting a flare drag on only makes it harder to beat.

I couldn't reach my GI today, he's not working. So I'll wait some days. This morning I felt slightly better. I think if I keep calm I'll be fine. There is a pattern here: summer == flaring + doctors on vacation...

garylouisville, I'm not doing any diet or supplements, I just avoid high-fiber foods.

It could be that seasonal diet changes are affecting your condition. When summer gets here many people eat more fresh vegetables and fruits. Some of these can make your condition worse.

some symptoms may be exacerbated, but not start a flare or make your flare worse.

Did you make an appointment with him anyway?
Yes, it sucks when they're on holidays and we need them.

Is there not another doctor you can see while yours in on holiday? If you have a GP, call him/her and request them till you see your doc when he gets back.
