Hi There,

I just had a colonoscopy and I have inflammation in the rectal area so my doctor prescribed Canasa suppositories. Not big on drugs but I don't have concerns about taking a 5ASA drug in this fashion. But since I don't have insurance it looks like it is $1000 per 30 for 1 gram strength at my local pharmacy. I found a Canadian pharmacy that sells the same thing under brand name Salofalk for $71 and shipping. Any reason not to order from Canada? I would list the url but not sure if that is okay? Also for those that have used suppository, is it difficult to retain it over night? Thanks, Barry

If you can get the prescription for less from Canada then go for it. Especially since you don't have insurance. Just use a reputable Canadian pharmacy (search our forum it's been discussed numerous times). Many here use Salofalk suppositories, it's essentially the same thing as canasa. They're topical anti-inflammatory medications that are very safe and tolerated well, by the vast majority of us without side effects.

I always did it when I was uninsured. I would never pay retail US pharmacy price, it's a huge ripoff.

Thanks for the replies, it is greatly appreciated. Even with 80/20 prescription insurance, ordering internationally is cheaper for this drug. Only problem is I now have to wait 2 weeks for something I would like to start on right away, but I think I will be able to manage.

Yeah, waiting is a pain. I have 90/10 and it would be expensive (but my scripts are usually $15/$30/$50). The only reason it makes sense is if the $ goes toward your out of pocket and you know you're headed there. I've hit my out of pocket the past couple years so spending money out of my own pocket is just more money i would spend on top of the out of pocket. Mught as well put the $1000 there and get closer to the $2500 i need to spend for 100% coverage.

You should call your doctor's office and see if they can give you two weeks worth of samples.

Retaining definitely depends on the severity of the inflammation. I had a flare up once where I couldn't retain canasa. Hopefully you're not in that condition.

This is a mild flare so it sounds like I should be able to retain the suppository overnight.

Yes order from Canada, i have done it in the past with Salofalk and no issues at showed up fast and was way cheaper than here in the US

Is Salofalk / Canasa better than Asacol suppositories for Proctitis and Sigmoiditis?

I don't think it makes any difference. A mesalamine suppository is a mesalamine suppository is a mesalamine suppository.
