Apparently we have a threefold increased risk of these.. Does anyone have or have had either

aguywithuc had a DVT i believe. It scares me badly so I stopped taking estrogen years ago. I have migraines too which increase risk. Just have to be very careful, keep active, stretch the legs. I wonder if the risk is reduced after surgery? It's weird because from what i read, the increased risk sounds very specific to IBD, not necessarily to other inflammatory conditions.

Yes. I have had two PEs and two DVTs... PEs are invariably a DVT that breaks away and gets to your lungs so they usually go together. . PEs can be fatal with no chance of resuscitation so require immediate treatment ... Sadly I don't think the link with IBD is promoted nearly enough.

I'm not aware that Migraines increase your chance but rather, from what I have read, they could be a very mild symptom of Hughes syndrome (or sticky blood).

Are there any tests to Check your risks. I've recently got phlebitis. Under my right arm. My Dr think it's related to trauma but I haven't done anything to it. I use a natural hormone cream with wild yam in it. That's the only thing I could link to the phlebitis until I read the connection with inflammitory bowel and DVTs..now I'm worried

D dimer blood test indicates whether you (a) don't have a clot or (b) could have and need further tests. In my experience you can feel a DVT - anything from a dull ache that won't go. Also look to see if one limb is slightly larger than the other. For a PE my experience is either very out of breadth and/or if you take a deep breadth, it is like something catches your breadth around the middle of your breast bone.

They said its clots on tiniest veins just under the surface of the skin. A minor condition that usually heals within a few weeks. Usually caused my injury or trauma.. None of which I've had. The only risk factor I have for phlebitis is a natural wild yam which can mimic estrogen. My blood has always clottled fast but I have no family history of clotting problem. I didn't know the connection with IBD until today. I have proctitis. I'm very depressed this could be linked

Blood clots are an increased risk for us, compared to the general population. That hardly means you'll get one.

Other increased risk areas are:

Eyes. Inflammation in the pigmented part of the eye, a condition called uveitis, is a common complication.

Joints. There is a fairly strong association with seronegative spondyloarthropathies (psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylities, and other disorders). These forms of arthritis involve joints of the limbs and the spine.

Skin Disorders. Patients with ulcerative colitis have a higher risk for skin disorders and may experience an ulcerative rash called pyoderma gangrenosum that tends to heal in the center but continue to spread. Patients may also have mouth sores.

I'm sure it is all autoimmune related for these, the immune system can attack other things in rouhgly 20 percent of patients.

Blimey I've had these and they don't depress me ... You just get on and manage it. If concerned find out for sure and go from there.

On the negative, no other knock on effect of IBD can kill you as quick as a PE ... So this link is more serious than other issues and should be more widely known. On the positive ... It's very controllable.

Should have added you can have an INR blood test which gives your percentage clotting speed. This is a regular for people on warfarin but can be used to test anyone's clotting speed if you are concerned but do not think you yet have a clot.
