I love Christmas. It has always been my favorite holiday. Traditionally in Costa Rica they celebrate with dinner and presents on Christmas Eve, I am English and so of course, my family and I celebrate on Christmas day, in the traditional English way, and not when the clock strikes 12 on Christmas Eve, as the Costa Ricans. Another difference in Costa Rica, is that usually on Boxing day Costa Ricans head off to the beach to celebrate their Christmas holiday together with family (Can you imagine doing that in the UK....Brrrr!) and I really love the fact that everyone in Costa Rica, from accountants to road sweepers, all go off to the beach for a few days and everywhere is quiet, its great!
Myself and my Husband don't go anywhere, we just enjoy the peace and quiet, which is another thing I personally think Christmas is all about for me, and is made all the more enjoyable by the fact that we live high up on a mountain, surrounded by lush forest and greenery, with only the sounds of the animals, and other creatures, occasionally breaking the wonderful silence.
Also in December and January in Costa Rica the rainy season comes to an end, and for two months before the summer starts, we experience quite strong chilly winds (well chilly for Costa Rica, the lowest temperature will be no lower than around 20 degrees!) barrelling down the central valley, and because of our isolated position at the top of a mountain, the wind howls around our home, and makes us feel more like we are living in Dracula's castle than our usually light and sunny house!
This Christmas will be tricky for me foodwise, as there is not much I can eat!! I should be fine with the turkey, potatoes and veg, and that's about it really. But, I am thrilled to have found a company that makes sulfite-free wine, which is delicious, the incredible difference without the sulfites is hard to explain, even my husband (an avid longtime Red wine drinker) is hooked, and can be caught most evenings furtively seeking out the corkscrew, so it is time to hide these wonderfully pure, and very morish wines.
On Christmas day we like to gather around as a family, and open our presents, whilst quaffing champagne with orange juice or Bucks Fizz as our friends from the US prefer to call it (sadly it will be something home made in my case this year) and we like to eat our lunch at around 1.00 p.m., after which we will no doubt all sit down to recover, whilst watching a suitably festive movie, and I am planning on purchasing the new James Bond movie for this years televisual feast! Oh, I forgot to mention, my daughters boyfriend will be having his first Christmas lunch with us, and so that should make things a little different, his English is quite good, and he will no doubt add a little Latin color and energy to the whole occasion.
