I've been friends with her since I was 14 (I'm now 46) but my bday was January 16th and she knows how strongly I feel about
raising awareness for IBD, so not only did she get me a necklace of a purple ribbon (btw, I have 4 tattoos of butterflies with purple ribbons) but she got me a hoodie that says, "Supporting the fighters, admiring the survivors, honoring the taken, and never give up hope - Crohn's and Colitis Awareness". This saying hits me very personally because I lost my mother due to complications of Crohn's when I was 10 years old and my mother was just 36.
Anyway, I just thought it was cool of her thoughtfulness and had to share :)

What a good friend you have. So sorry you lost your mother at such an early age. Your tattoos sound cool.

She knows how devastating it was to lose my mom. My mom was my world - like most 10 year olds I suppose. But she truly is a one of a kind friend. Such a heart of gold. :)

IMO, the awareness for IBD should be on the same level as cancer but it isn't. You have many silent warriors getting wrecked with this kind of disease and not getting any support. It's just as debilitating, if not worse in some cases.

The lack of knowledge is really damaging too. IBD is seen as a joke (see: one of last year's Super Bowl ads... millions of people seeing a guy looking for a spot to sit down and he sees someone holding a book that said something like "Managing your IBD" and the guy quickly goes away).

I totally agree that more awareness should be raised for IBD. I was actually tickled when commercials for UC medications came on TV. Now I've been seeing it more and more on the local news. Also, when I attended the Take Steps walk one of the news anchors was there and previously she would bring it up on the news.
But when people ask me about
my tats I don't hesitate to tell them what they mean to me. Btw, one of my tats is on the back of my neck and is a monarch butterfly but it's body is a purple ribbon with the word hope on the ribbon.
